This may be a really stupid questin but here goes. What's a good/fast lug wrench? There are the star types and extendables like so:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku

I know I need a torque wrench to finish them off but what wrench should be used primarily? I'd like something fast.

TIA!

I Purchased a Sears 3' breaker bar which I keep a correct size 6 point lug socket on (I forget the size offhand). I keep it under the carpeted velcro flap that connects the carpet to the base of the back of the rear seats. Gives me plenty of torque and it's always right where I can get to it w/o taking up storage room.

For speed I use an electric impact wrench. I also have a dc converter so I can use it on or off the road .

After you rotate your tires a few times, the chrome caps will fall off your lug nutsz. You should swap those lug nutz for real ones. Get a lug wrench to fit the new size lug nutz..

What's a good torque wrench (around $50)? Is it important to have a proper torque on the wheels. I have an air compressor with a impact wrench.

I picked up a Craftsman at Sears just the other day, but it was about 65 bucks before taxes. 1/2" drive, I think the range is 15-150 lb/ft. Personally I think if you're going to get one, you might as well spend a little more for a better quality one.

A torque wrench is very important to ensure your wheels are equally tightened all around. It is very easy to over-torqued the lugs and either sheer them off as you do it, or sheer them off as you try to get them off. You keep the wheels free of wobble and the risk of the lugs coming loose (bad mojo).

Interesting. I've never torqued my lug nuts and never had any problems of the kind described.

Matt,

You are just too good. Not everyone thinks with their brain (reminder about the people using chains at Hells Gate with the baby strapped in). Boy, we can all come up with lots of examples, but that would be overkill.

Yup, when my elbow joint pops then it's 80 pounds torque. When the elbow pops and the knuckles crack it's 110 pounds.

Impact wrenches may be fine for taking lugs off but please dont use them to put them back on. I know some impact wrenches have adjustable torque on them but I dont trust them. It sucks to get a flat and then realize some bozo torqued your lug nuts to something like 400 lb/ft. I broke a factory lug wrench and a craftsman deep well socket trying to get mine loose on our van after having brake work done.

As far as standard lug wrenches go I like a simple four way wrench. Its also nice if you happen to stop to help someone. You will be more likely to have the right size with it. Plus they are easy to spin fast once you break the lugnut loose.

two of my fake covers just came off my lugs. Where can I get new, better lugs and what size are they?

TIRE store for lug nuts is always a good bet

Another benifit of torque wrenching your lug nuts is keeping those rotors from warping.
