Just switch wheels and tires with him...but don't tell him. See if he notices.

You can look at the Goodyears as being like the factory fill engine oil, the "break in" set. Once you're sure everything's going to hold together, and you're going to keep it for a long time, then you can switch it over to the good stuff!

Given the gremlins that have plagued a lot of people, if the Goodyears are "good enough" for the time being, it might be wise to hold off popping for a new set of tires until you're sure you're not going to get hit with, or can live with, some of the air filter/EGR/tranny/oily intake issues.

Hey, at least the Goodyears were paid for when you bought the vehicle.

I constantly read about people bashing the STs and even had someone on another website read the tirerack reviews. I read several pages of the revies and a clear majority of the people love the tires.

I like my tires. They do well in dry, wet, and winter driving conditions. I've driven worse, the POS OEM tires on my 2000 Xterra.

This is exactly my sentiments. Right now I have bigger issues to resolve than tires. Once I know this Jeep is a keeper, the ST's are gone. I guess I spun around one too many times on them. I find it funny that they seem to handle better on snow & ice than in the rain. As far as I'm concerned, they will be free to a good home once I'm done with them.

One tire I know of that would probably meet your needs at a VERY affordable price is the General Grabber AT2 which can be found at www.tirerack.com among many other place (some probably local in your area). Considering your needs and the fact that you live in Colorado, I think these tires would work out well for you.

They are very similiar to the BFG A/T tires although cost about half the price... you still get the same performance as well as a 60,000 mile warranty. For the $70-80 you'll pay per tire I don't think you'll be able to find a better deal on a better tire. Go and read all the reviews of the tire on Tire Rack or just do a seach on this site for "Grabber" as I've never read a bad review about them ;)

Snow, ice, lots of rain, dry, auto-x track and soon the Nuerburgring. Stock tires and I use the ESP at least once a week going around corners. I am happy with the stock tires. They handle well cruising the autobahn at 100-110mph. Not exactly sire what the issue is with the tires but I think I can safely say I beat mine up the most here. If I get 10k out of them I am happy.
