Hi, any suggestions on what this could be or is it normal. when i engage 4wh hi or low it seems fine when i'm going straight but when i start turning lets say making a u-turn i hear a metal to metal sound almost like the gears meshing together when i straighten back out its fine. and yes i'm driving on sand or dirt while doing this.Is this sound normal.I just dont want to break anything. I have not changed any of the fluids since i have had the jeep diff nor transfer. I have the command tract partime system.. Thanks,Matty

Haha. I get something like that before it engages good. Its best to put it into 4low or part-time before you are going to be turning or spinning for alittle while so it has time to go into 4wheel drive. If it let off the gas it helps also, same for going back out.

Do you have a lift? When I'm in 4 wheel drive my CVs always grumble a little at full steering lock. 45,000 miles and no major issues though.

No lift here, this is after it has engaged and have been going for a while. When i pull a u turn or sharp turn, not turned all the way i can hear almost a high pitched grinding sound. It sounds like its coming from underneath my door (transfer case) i guess?? I am going pretty slow too not hacking on it..

Sounds like you have the Command track 4 wheel drive. This 4 wheel drive is only for loose and slippery surfaces. When doing u turns it will defenitely sound like it's grinding.

to me it sounds like you are binding. Reason being because when turning the outer wheel must spin faster than the inner wheel, it has to cover a great size apex than the inner. With a the KJ all 4 wheels spin at the same speed. This is unlike an AWD system where the outer wheel will spin faster when turning, like on subbies or full time AWD suv's. Just my 2cents

..Now that I'm sober that's what I meant to say. My KJ is brand new and if I try and pull a U turn with full lockout on every point I will experience the same thing (even on ice). That's just the 4 wheel drive system. It's a basic system but very tough.
