It seems the conclusion of former discussions of air filters is the OEM is equal to or better than most. However, I'm wondering what you all know about AFE air filters. It's a brand that is new to me.

Same as the K&N filters,it uses medical grade gauze and oil to trap dirt.I've ran both K&N and AFE fiters in my gas KJ and switched to AEM DRYFLOW air filter(no oil and washable, really nice) it seems to work better for dusty conditions. My 2 cents though.

Well I don't know about that filter company, but when buying a filter you need to consider what you want to get out of it and the possible risks of such.

The OEM filter on the CRD is right in the middle of the pack in all tests I've seen. By being in the middle I mean as far as performance and filtration goes, for example AC Delco filters typically rate as having some of the best filtration capability of any brand but also do not provide any great performance boosts.

K&N OTOH is just the opposite, they provide great airflow but "bottom of the bucket" filtration. If you want more performance at the risk of hurting your engine, than go with something like K&N.

With a turbo though, inhanced airflow from a better intake system is not really needed as the turbo is a forced induction system so you'll always get enough air with any filter. For me I'm just going to stick with the OEM and perhaps in the future get an AC Delco filter

AFE is a well known brand. Very popular in the diesel pickup market. They are supposed to filter better than K&N and the oil is supposed to be compatible with intakes, whatever that means. I would choose it over K&N but I don't like oiled elements as I had a K&N on my 01 Cummins and within a few thousand miles I had oil on the compressor blades. Plus a K&N is mostly just glorified a rock guard. I would just swiss cheese the air box and keep the stock element. A lot of people here poop-poop the idea of free flow intakes, but it is very common in diesel pickups and can make measureable (although minimal) difference in power, mileage and EGTs. So, its not without merit. But I don't think its a good idea to sacrific filteration ablilty. The need to increase intake flow depends on horsepower being produced and desired performance. A 600hp, twin turbos Cummins will need a lot more air than a stock intake can provide. Nothing filters better that paper and unless your into big horsepower or racing, the stock intake is probably OK.

Where did you find that info? The A/C Delco filter would be no better then the OEM MOPAR filter. I hope you haven't been to the website below and misunderstood what it was about, that OEM is better then any aftermarket and not AC Delco better that any other filter.

If you want to find out about the way filters are trested and how some measured up to the OEM filter used in a GM Duramax then go to ISO test of aftermarket filters using a GM Duramax diesel

PS: The AFE filter was also tested and didn't measure up to the OEM filter (A/C Delco) used in the Duramax

PS again: Read the comments at the bottom of the tests so there is no confussion.

Went to Advance to pick up spare filters for the MB. Air filter wasn't in stock, they wanted $53 for a Fram paper air filter, and had K&N listed for $56. Thanks to the links oldnavy sent me, I ordered an OEM filter for it for $23 on line.

Anyway, the counter guy at Advance tried like the devil to talk me into ordering a K&N filter for the MB, giving me the whole spiel.

Should have seen the look on his face when I told him "Nah, I'll pass for now, but when I'm ready to completely trash my engine I'll be sure to come back and order a K&N".

What links are you speaking of for decent priced air filters?

Wrong vehicle, the ones I mentioned are for Mercedes Benz. Just mentioned them as a setup for the K&N punchline.

Sure, it's a forced induction system.......but it can only produce a certain amount of power IF the intake side can provide it. More Power = More air + more fuel.

Aftermarket intake systems can also contribute to lower EGT's and faster shut-down times as well.

I run the AFE Magnum Force Intake w/Torque Tube (Pro-Guard*7) on my 2003 Dodge RAM 2500.......the quality of the AFE unit is great. The Pro-Guard*7 also has a 99.5% filtering efficiency......same as a paper filter, but flows quite a few more CFM over stock.
