I've put about 1000 Km on my CRD owning it for only a week, and still love driving it.

Being new to diesel's, and always listening to the engine on my M3, i find myself listening to the diesel a lot. So this brings me to my first question...

1. My dealer told me that this is one of the quietest diesels around, but i find it loud in slower situations, as well when all the windows are up and im at about 55 - 60mph and only have the pedal pressed about 15-20% or so. If i push the pedal slightly harder, its much quieter. do i have a problem or is this the way it is, it dosn't bother me, unless there is a problem...

2. Also whiel crusing at about 60 mph, and i let completely off the gas pedal, i can fell the vehicle slightly learch forward. is this normal?

3. After driving for a while and I pull into a parking spot, when i shift from "D" to "N", it seems like a lot of pressure is being taken off the tranny. Normal?

Maybe im paying too much attention to things, i've never owned an auto tranny before or a diesel, so i don't know what is expected.

Thanks for anyone's imput

Again, opinions being a dime a dozen. I can tell you what I personally experience/do.
#1) The engine is loud only because we have crap for Diesel fuel in North America as compared to Europe. Our cetane level is about 46 on average where in Europe it is 50 or just slightly above. My CRD quiets down after adding about 6~8 oz. of Cetane Boost to each 20 gal of fuel. I use Power Service and it makes a noticeable difference in noise.

#2) This depends if at 60 m.p.h your TC is locked up or not. I notice that if the TC has not kicked into OD gear, when I let my foot off the accelerator that there is a "slight" lurch.

#3) I experience the the hard shift from 'D' to either 'N' or 'P'. Guess it does not bother me.

2) Could also be excess boost from the turbo - our rig doesn't have a wastegate to bleed off excess turbo air pressure.

3) This is probably because you're not used to the torque of the diesel. This motor has a lot more torque at idle than a gas engine. It's definitely pulling against the tranny at idle.

National cetane average is about 42 at present (there is a lot of 38 cetane fuel out) and will jump to 46 average with advent of ULSD fuel. Trucking industry tried to keep the fuel at 42 Cetane, while auto industry wanted 50 cetane and EPA finally said 46 is minium. The process of making the ULSD will have most diesel being 50 cetane range as a general rule and to get it lower cetane will actually cost more, for this reason I don't think we will see much fuel below 46 or 48 cetane depending on feed stock.

It's one of the quitest diesels around because it's one of the only diesels around. If you want to quiet this down and smooth it out, get some biodiesel. Even 5% does wonders, do 20% and you will think it's a different motor.

RFCRD motors are electric and engines are gas/diesel.

Hey, I have one that actually DOES have a motor in it. How's that for being schizophrenic, I own an electric and two diesels.

I run european fuels in my CRD. It is by far one of the LOUDEST engines out there. Audi, BMW and MB make some of the quietest diesel engines out now. The new Audi 4.2TDI barely sounds like it is running.
