Post subject:  front propellor shaft

hi folks!
the rubber seal/ boot at the gearbox end of the front propeller-shaft has torn completely allowing dirt into the joint. can one buy this boot and is it a big job (do i have to take the entire joint apart) to replace it? i can't find any description on how to dismantle it, apart from how to remove the prop-shaft from the vehicle.
thanks in anticipation
jonathan

This is the actuall drive shaft you are talking about correct? Goes from the transfer case to front diff. I'm pretty sure it's not servicable. You would have to replace the whole thing. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Good gosh! That guy paid $800 for a CV shaft!!

The front driveline cannot be serviced. For some reason Chrysler will not sell just the boot and wants you to buy the entire shaft which is around $400 I think. You could check junk yards for a wrecked libby.

or have tom woods built you one with service able u joints. you'll have to change the flanges at the pinion and t/case.

hi again,
does anyone know if the front prop-shaft is the same on the 2.4l , 3.7l and CRD models? manual as well as automatic. the reason being that i've sourced a crashed crd with manual box. (there are not so many libertys in sweden)
mine is a 2.4l with manual box.
thanks

I would think they are the same. Tcase is the same and the front diff is the same.

Take a tape measure and measure the length of yours and then the length of the one on the CRD.

Same with the front diff location on the CRD (not that it's far enough to make a difference). Something you might want to consider is talking with an aftermarket CV maker. For example, raxles.com in Florida makes really nice axles and has great customer service. They even do custom jobs if you can give them the specs.

Go with Tom Woods. I replaced mine and so far it is great. It will require more work then replacing the original but next time all you will have to do is replace u-joints and have a far stronger axle. E-mail me if you need instructions or just look through the pages of this forum where I posted them before. (email: wasatch@utahbroadband.com) :D
