My wife loves her CRD and would kill me if she knew that I offered to sell it to a Californian (for a profit) last week. It has been 100% reliable in the 17,000 miles we have owned it. She absolutely loves the diesel racket, the incredible acceleration (she has a lead foot), and the fact no matter how hard she tries, she still averages 24 mpg in mixed driving. This is the only SUV that we have ever owned that felt comfortable cruising on the interstate at 95mph. So far she hasn't got any tickets and we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Overall I'm mildly satisfied with the Jeep. Its a nice, tight little vehicle and its perfect for the kind of use my wife puts it through. Aside from the EGR and a series of bad glow plugs, we haven't had any problems with it. And even with those, it was a CEL and not leaving us stranded.

I would be very happy if it 1) got the advertised MPG and 2) got all of these bugs worked out of it so I don't keep worrying about it when we take it out of town.

Like others have posted, there really isn't anything else like it. (sometimes that is good, sometimes that is bad)

I have an 06 built in Feb. I have not had any recall or TSB work on it and it runs/shifts perfect. 26000miles and nothing but oil changes. I had the nibble at 55mph early on but it went away when ULSD came in. i think the CRD is sensitive to fuel changes because of the EGR valve .

Let me add to the assorted praise:

1) Its mileage is great (learn to drive it)
2) It takes multiple fuels
3) Its tough as nails

And I have used the multiple fuel feature. Diesel, Off-road diesel, heating oil, and biodiesel..even vegetable oil mixed in. During Katrina gouging, I ran home heating oil from my basement, which I had purchased at $1.50/g the previous year. Illegal, yes, but who was screwing who? I imagine if a genuine crisis were to happen, I'd be glad to both have a high-clearance 4x4 that can fill up from any basement, government building, construction site, home lab or a resteraunt. Ask the guys in New Orleans if they wished they had a diesel Jeep.

When the $%!t hits the fan, you'll be glad you're in a CRD Jeep.

Viva La CRD Liberty! Just pulled another loaded two horse trailer out of a sticky place in the woods Friday. The pickup pulling the trailer couldn't get up the hill and while backing back down put a wheel/trailer axle in the ditch. They unloaded and still couldn't get back on the road. I unhooked my loaded firewood trailer and pulled the horse trailer out of the ditch and up the remainder of the hill.

'05 Sport bought 4/05 now with just under 39k miles. 1 repair beyond normal maint (egr@10k). I did change out those awful oem tires and have ball joints done. I don't use any additives, the dealer changes my oil (get free changes) and uses the 0-40 oil. I don't use the block heater and the car has started at -12F.
I get 25+/-mpg in the summer and 23+/- in the winter. My driving is about 80% hiway @75.

I have taken it on very long trips including one with over 200miles of dirt road. The jeep just keeps running.

WHAT WOULD I REPLACE IT WITH ?

If you have the answer, tell me. I keep looking for a better vehicle for my needs, but (so far) have not found one

I've had my CRD for 18 months and 24,000 miles, and I'm happy with it. The mileage is excellent (I get better than the sticker mileage), it is a handy size for easy parking and woods maneuvering, and has been relatively trouble free. It has good traction and driveability, both on snowy roads and in sand or mud conditions. It tows well without problems. It has had a few minor problems, but this is typical of any new design of vehicle. If they were still available, I'd buy another if anything happened to the one I'm driving. I just have trouble understanding why Chrysler/Jeep is not willing to put enough effort in to keep this good little vehicle in the Jeep selection of vehicles.

I wonder what kind of M.P.G. i'd get driving a gas libby the way i drive the CRD, i'm sure it would not be good. The CRD hums along at 23-24 M.P.G. with me jumping on it frequently.

Did I mention that Libby (our CRuD<--nickname family member gave it)is probably the best SUV we have ever owned for driving in snowy and ice packed road conditions?

We had a blizzard last month and the interstate was closed. We didn't want to spend the night away because of our children (2 cats and 1 dog) and we drove 60 miles in very bad weather and Libby was AWESOME. I had 4 foot snow drifts in my driveway and plowed right through them. It was FUN.

I love my CRD. Bought it with the intention to keep it forever & still intend to. It's a fantastic compromise vehicle, having such a range of normally exclusive capabilities---tow capacity, off road ability, acceleration, maneuverability, mileage, emissions, durability, longevity, alternative fuel compatibility, mountain road handling ability, maintainability... Nothing compares to it, and I doubt anything will in the near future. It's our go anywhere, tow anything (to a point :D ) utility vehicle, from loads of gravel to snow-covered roads to horse hauling. It does it all well. And yet, I can zip through the narrowest, winding mountain roads, as well as parking lots, with grace and little effort while also getting better mileage than most vehicles on the road today. I only wish it had a slightly longer wheelbase, a more rugged (spray-down) interior, removable top, and a PTO. But, what the hay, it's close enough. However, my like of it and long-term aspirations really put me between a rock & a hard place in regard to the tranny problem, and less so to the EGR problem. I've got to find a permanent solution one way or another, because there's no way I can afford the vehicle in the long-term otherwise, but it's looking doubtful we'll be seeing that from DC and anything less is of no value to me. I'll certainly be keeping this vehicle, with aftermarket TC or manual tranny or whatever else, but if it turns out to be on my dime, then I will personally boycott DC for the rest of my life (to a point...). While I am more than satisfied with the vehicle for its capabilties & general design, I am not satisfied w/DC's engineering quality & customer service.

Great point!

I traded in a 1996 Mercedes E320 with 45,000 miles for my CRD. I have had it since April of 06 and no problems. Two TSB's thats it.

Now to your quote. They are re-designing the Liberty for 2008. Check out the link below for several spy shots.

http://www.allpar.com/trucks/jeep/liberty-2008.html

The 2.8L CRD was a test for future Diesel applications. In early 2007, a new 3.0L CRD will be available in the Grand Cherokee. It will also be available in some other Jeep vehicles as well as the Dodge Durango. The Liberty will have the new CRD by the end of 2008 or early 2009

I love this vehicle. I cannot see myself driving anything else.

I love my CRD. :D I would not trade it for anything. I love the torque, mileage, and well the whole thing. Got a beef with the esp, goin to take some getting used to. Tires are not good but new ones will be on it soon. Had the CEL come on about 3000 km's but it cleared on its own and have had no problems. Did notice a studder in the tranny but if you accelerate past the point where the TC locks then there is no shudder. Just have to learn how to deal with the little things. Goin to keep it for a long time.

I took my beloved CRD out for its last 4x4 blat for the year today; me and a couple of mates. One with a dual ARB locked, 35" MTR'd and 4.11 geared 6 inch lifted TJ, and a Landrover that resembles more of a Unimog than a defender - dual locked, gear'd and 35" Maxxis Creepy Crawlys.
They were gobsmacked at its performance today, but non more so than I. It seems EVERY time I take this thing out it just impresses me more and more. There must be something about, it might have a bit of a 'secret 4x4 recipie' when it comes to its specs. The wheelbase must be 'just right', the torque of the CRD feels 'just right' when crawling, the performance or the auto feel 'just right' and the grip with the 245 MTRs and a rear ARB locker - you guessed it, 'just right' ................ I can only imagine what she'd be like when its got a front ARB to go with it 8) 8) It even crawled up a mega steep section today where the TJ had problem ! :P .

Some pics of today.

Mine is equally as good, no probs with tranny or engine for 24000km. I believe a big part of the reliability here in Australia is our warm weather and good quality ULSD fuel. I can't make it stutter either.

I was totally impressed by the liberty in the snow. My wife told me on Sunday afternoon that she couldn't get the van out of the drive, and I thought she was full of it. I just got back from the slurp and burp with the liberty and couldn't even tell the road was bad. But, when I got in her front wheel drive van and tried to get it up the ice-covered hill, I had an all new appreciation of the liberty. Even with the crappy factory tires, this little booger just climbed right up the hill and out to the highway.

I am glad I got my skids on it, though, because I was hitting some of the snow plow ruts hard. I guess it is time to do that lift...
