The following is the answer to a inquiry I sent MFA Oil Company here in MO as to what cetane their Premium ULSD was and were they are selling it at presently. It is $2.349 at Qulin, MO.

Quote:
The average cetane is 49 on our PDF Uthra. We have ULSD at all Break Time and soon at all MFA Oil Company locations.

Thank you
MFA Oil Company

That 49 is probably pretty good. Throw in some PS and then you have some real numbers. I don't know what it is here, but I use 10 oz of PS per tankfull just to keep the fuel liquid.

Don't know where you are, but in US the average cetane for LSD is 42 and for ULSD it is 46 cetane. Our CRD's engine was designed for 50 cetane plus fuel.

I am in central Colorado. They don't post those numbers on the pumps. I knew the requirements. That's why I said 49 was good. I don't think ours are that high out here.

yes the 49 is quite good and that is why I mentioned about the design spec for diesel fuel.

If you are using the LSD that averages 42 cetane, you will not believe the difference after a couple of tanks. Remember 5 gal of LSD and 15 gal of 46 cetane ULSD makes 125 PPM fuel at about 44 cetane.

Most of our problems with the engine will go away I believe with the use of ULSD fuel. We are on our third tank of the ULSD and the change in the CRD as really been eye opening, it runs snmother and quiter then it did when running B20 LSD, has more pep and the huge clouds of smoke after a couple of weeks of city driving are no longer. I still am using Power Service, but the fuel provider has stated they use a bio based fuel additive that increases lubercisity and is a cetane improver.

That said I still have the clunky shift at 35 if I back off suddenly at 35 mph, all other tranny complaints seem to have dissappeared as we drive the vehicle. Maybe there is a learning curve after the F37, 47,000 more miles to find out.

We have had ULSD out here for about 8 months now. You can still get LSD fuel for off road applications. I haven't noticed any issues with my CRD in 21000 miles. It is a '06. I did clean the MAP sensor last weekend for the 1st time and it was pretty gunky. I don't think ULSD will help that any.

The oil that is going into the system is probably the reason the little bit of soot is becoming a bigger problem. I guess we will know for sure when I check mine later in the spring since I am now using ULSD and have been running the EHM to prevent oil in intake. Once I met those two conditions I cleaned the sensor and will check again in spring when I get about 6 or 7 thousand miles on the cleaning.
