So, my CRD just hit 12.5 k so I did my first self-oil-change (the second for the engine. First was at 6250 by the dealer). It was a lot easier than in any vehicle I've had before Gave it a Mopar filter, new crush washer, and 6.4 quarts of Rotella-T 5w40. So far so good, right? Well, when I first slid under, I noticed a good deal of oil residue all over that side of the engine, back as far as the tranny cooling lines, as far up as the underside of the turbo spooler on the exhaust line and enough that the under side of the IFS subframe was slick from runover. I sprayed some brake parts cleaner on some conspicuous areas and it came right off and I'll keep an eye on them to see if it re-appears.

So, has anyone else seen this and is it indicative of another problem? I've also noticed that in the past few tanks, my average MPG is going down. It went to about 26 after the ORM and I'm now having a hard time putting 21 out of mixed driving. The engine also doesn't seem quite as peppy off the start (or at highway speeds for that matter). May or may not be that I had my F37 done about 1000 miles ago.

Thoughts?
Dan

Well, mine is bone dry after 26,000 miles. Oil residue is never a good sign. Check your CAC hose clamps. Especially the one on the turbo. Like you said, clean it off and see if you can get a better picture as to where it is coming from. As far as your mileage, it is difficult to tell unless you drive the exact same way and place to notice a difference. 21 mpg still isn't horrible with mixed driving. I get 24 sometimes with all highway so throw in city stop and go and it is only going to go down. I'm not sold on the ORM. I feel it will shorten engine life long term. I feel we need a MAF sensor.

What's the minimum of components that are needed to move out of the way to get access to the area for a good view/troubleshooting? Without taking everything apart, it looks like the engine cover and airbox being removed (at a minimum) would be needed to get access.

That should do it. I'd just clean it all off, then watch it carefully everyday for changes. You can check the hose clamp without tearing anything apart.

The last bolt (passenger side, closest to firewall) on the cylinder head has been known to leak oil and leak down the side of the engine and then onto the bell housing of the transmission and oil pan. Your doing the right thing with the brake cleaner to keep an eye on the situation.

I hate to say it but... im seeing the same thing you are... I myself am about 1200 mi into the ORM and just had the F37 done 400 miles ago, im up for my first "non-dealer" oil change and went to check my oil filter size ehen i saw oil all over the left side of the motor. I then popened the hood and saw it on the turbo and down the sides...

I have not had the chance to get in there yet to look... I have been talking to my dealer and they are (beleave it or not) looking into a way to reverse the F37 flash for me as well as look into the cause of the oil "spray" and of course fix my EGR and hose clamps... < - - - might be a cause??? exhaust leak??? I know i have one...

on a side note.. my EGR just went out for the first time at 46,500 miles.... (might have something to do with it?)

So did your EGR go out 1200 miles ago, and you did the ORM then? Or,were you switching back and forth? Can a EGR go out when the ORM is active?

Did it continue to run like that, or when you did the ORM, did it get better?

Unless I really crank my oil filter on it leaks at the seal. This winter I had to tighten the filter with a filter wrench to stop it from leaking at start-up.

Sound like you two guys might have a leaking Turbo return oil line. I think there was a TSB out about changing the line on some of the CRD's or tighting up a loose one and that is most likely your problem.

Quite possibly :( I'll be pulling off the cover to clean the boost sensor tonight since my mileage just started getting crappy. I'll put a bright flashlight on the other side to see where the oil is coming from. To anyone who has seen it, is the leak (either from the turbo hose or from the corner of the head) obvious/isolated to someone looking for it? I'd expect to see a clean engine, but on the underside, there was about 2 feet worth of components that had spray on them, so.... I'm a little pessimistic at this point. I plugged the MAF back in just to see if anything else lights up the CEL...

Turns out it's the same darned CCV oil that causes problems everywhere else leaking out of the front of the turbo:
Image
I cleaned everything and tightened all the hoses up. Hopefully that'll stop the leak. I can't believe the amount of oil that came out of that darned thing. I guess I should start thinking about EHM or a provent again...

In other news, the MAP cleaning gave me a lot of responsiveness and about 3 mpg back. Do you all have retaining nuts on the studs that stick out of the top of the engine (that the plastic wire loom guard snaps onto... see pics). I would have thought that it would at least have nuts, but all I saw was two metal press-on clips at the studs on the driver's side(and nothing at all on the stud near the coolant reservoir.

Yup that is what mine had, but I replaced them with actual nylock nuts from local hardware store with a 10mm head on them.

I do after I added them back in March 05. Those same clips were on mine from the factory. Rattled like crazy at different engine rpm.
