Great idea Jeger. I like the suggestion of putting the tow strap into the receiver and holding it with the hitch pin. This would hold enough strain to pull a vehicle out?? I see alot of folks here advising not to use the ones with metal hooks on each end. If you have only loops on either end, how would you hook it to the vehicle that needs to be towed, if there wasn't a safe area to loop it around? I am "green" at towing so bear with me. I assume in most cases, there would be a part of the frame that you could loop the rope through the hoop. I have always been challenged as to where is the safest spot to hook onto a vehicle. Will any part of the rear frame do?

The safest way would probably be to get the tow hooks. Im not even sure myslef where you would hook the strap to. I know KJs don't have a frame, they are unibody so you can't hook it to the frame. I had an old Jeep long time ago and when I needed to be pulled out some guy hooked the strap to the sway bar on the front. I don't know if thats a good idea though :D

not a good idea hooking to the sway bar, better to hook to frame or some "strong" part of the frame not lower control arms, sway bars none of those

For a rear recovery point... the pin through the loop inside the reciever works great. If you can though, I have an extra tongue without a ball in it. I put a clevis through that. That way, I can put the loop into there, slide it in, and have no worries!

And yes, I have personally seen a "hook" from a tow strap go through the grill, ac condenser and rad of Superduty ahahah. FORDS!

If the vehicle you are trying to pull out doesn't have a hook ot hitch in the back... you're kind "hooped" with the loops ahaha. Uhm, best bet, buy a $10 axle strap so you can wrap it around something back there and use a clevis to hook it all up.

I personally have an old army box in the back of the KJ. Always keep it there. Have 125' of recovery strap, different lengths, all 25,000lbs (get different lengths for convienence, but all same load rating!!!!). Then also have three 50,000 clevis', two axle straps, and a couple hooks with slide pins. Pretty much pull anything and everything out with that.

And... spend the cash and get the front hooks!! You'll naver regret it!

I'd be weary on using a hitch pin to pull the weight of your vehicle, you bend that you'll be cutting it off/out.
