JoeJeeper...could you measure (on level ground) the distance from the ground to the bottom of your driver;s side mirror? Just want to see the overall lift number from the lift and tires...Thanx

If you have the ALL-J Superskid, a measurement from level ground to the Superskid would be cool...also ground to rear diff and to front crossbar where front and tranny skids connect.

I recently talk to Marlin, owner of Jeepin' by Al, about getting some replacement ball joint parts. I mentioned something about his lifts and cutting the CVs:
"the idea of cutting your CVs...its so
obvious why that'll work...I can't believe no one on the forums have
ever thought of it!"
and he replied with this:
"I just got a new set of front axles in today to cut down and make up the
procedure and instruction manual for others to follow.

I will sell cut down CV axles on my web also."

I posted what I thought about cutting the CVs in another thread. Keep in mind that this is my opinion.

The mirror's tapered, from the ground to the outside bottom edge it's 49 3/4", from the ground to the inside bottom edge it's 48 3/4". Joe :)

I'm really interested in this thread (and the 4" and 6" lifts), because I happen to be at a point where I need to spend about $1,500 in replacement parts just to keep my 2.5" lift. One of my upper ball joints needs to be repaired (so I need a pair of Al's arms), my front springs are sagging and I'm sure my struts (original) are going to go soon (so I need to invest in a new Frankenlift), my rack and pinion bushings are shot, my steering is making a weird noise that I need to get looked into, and there's something else that I haven't been able to find that's causing my wheels to toe in like crazy on turns (my tires are badly worn on the outside edge).

And I'm guessing that I've just been lucky that I haven't blown my LBJs or grenaded my front diff.

I'm disgusted enough that I've tried to contact All J's about a SFA conversion (no reply yet).

So...I'm asking myself, how in the world can they get away with a 4" lift when 2.5" is thrashing my KJ?

I would LOVE to see a full page write-up on JeepinByAl.com that lists all of the problems that KJ owners typically have when they lift their Jeeps 2.5", with a description next to each ones that explains why their 4" lift won't have those problems.

  1. Shaving the CV is interesting, but that doesn't affect the crazy angles imposed on the steering shafts. And when you look under the front of a lifted KJ, there are all kinds of unnatural angles that put pressure in places that were not built to withstand that much pressure.
  2. Clearance for 32" tires is great, but how do you avoid exploding the front diff?
  3. And what about the weak front axles? I guess JE Reel and others make stronger shafts, but it would be nice if they were included in the kit.

I really hope this kit is successful, and I don't have any problem with the price, but I'd sure like to have a better understanding of why it isn't going to break stuff when you're wheeling hard.

But...at the same time, it's nice that JoeJeeper has personal experience with it and seems to be pretty happy with it. Joe, do you expect to have to replace suspension and steering parts every couple of years?

HMMMM,just had to measure mine this morning to compare,I got 49 9/16" from the outside bottom edge(right before the housing starts to curve upward) on the drivers side and 49 5/8" on the passenger side. I'm about right on par with the 4" lift(running 31.9" tires) and have not had any issues offroad or onroad.

Lucky I guess,Did have to put 2 isolators in the rear to compinsate for all my tools/RL bumber/and duel carriers, the front I added a 3/8" clevis lift after adding the ARB and winch.SkyJacker coil lift, cut the springs to use Rancho struts, made up the differenc with Rusty's 3/4" poly spacers cut down to 1/2"(had to cut 1" off the bottom of the springs) to gain me back the 1" of coil length lost.Oh and it's the non-softride coils, equal to/about OME HD coils.

Is the Skyjacker lift that you used the 2.5 one? thats wierd, it doesnt really sound like you did anything over a 2.5" lift. Just some modifications to accomodate weight and to use the struts that you wanted to. Am I wrong?

Yep it's the 2.5" coil lift, when I first put it on I was over 4",I did get like the 3rd lift sold also and the coils where really stiff.Untill they broke in a little I could corner like I was on rails!!!!

I know the SkyJacker struts suck(that's why I change to Rancho's) but before the soft ride coils it was a really good lift.

OK for the sake of a good argument here, which we all know I like, we all buy/build/ steal/ whatever what we all call a 2.5 inch lift or there abouts so a 4 inch lift comes out and we say WHOOPEE another 1.5 inches of lift, right

Ok so reading this I find

outside of mirror/ inside of mirror/ tire heighth/ lift
joe jeeper 49 3/4- 48 3/4- 31.8- 4"
tjkj 49 9/16- 0.00 31.9- 2.5 Plus ?
mine 48 3/8- 47 3/8- 30.1- OME/HD

so if I installed a 31.9 or a 32 inch tire I would be 49 1/4 maybe or about 1/2 inch of what a 4 inch gives you or am I looking at the measurements all wrong :? :? :?

yeah, thats what i was trying to figure out too... so if thats true, its actually a 3 inch lift.. which many of us get with a couple of conduit nuts and spring isolators... or a frankie

Troy, if you went with a diff collar I think you would be fine to run 32"-33" with Al's lifts. Yeah the cv's are at extreme angles but this kit appears to be very well thought out and IMO very resonably priced. If you need a inner CV boot for your front end I think I have a spare. We'll chalk it up to karma. :D
