OK, just kidding. To keep our little uptopia filled with great info, 2 or 3 mods is not a problem. They just have to understand that they are not here to direct every thread nor jump in at every and any mis-step. It is to moderate...slightly nudge...point in the correct direction. In the 5 years since I started L.O.S.T., I have only had to ban 3 members +/- 1. A mod actaully has to be a bit thick skinned and be able to put his/her personal feeelings aside. It is not as easy as it seems...people start PMing ya'...calling you out...trying to get you "involved" in the arguement. You just have to stay calm and consistent. Also remember that all members that have been here for a while can basically do the same duties as "Moderator" bu also staying calm in the storm.

That is funny gmctd...I was typing my response following Reflex...and then I see your post which says the same thing basically.

I do think the section is busy enough to warrant more than one mod. And I think both nominations would be excellent choices. The key issue on forums I have been a moderator on has been communication between the mods, when one has some issues with a poster, simply ask the other one to intervene to avoid a problem.

Its nice to know that your that even handed, Darby, there have been times where I've wondered if they have been calling for my head. ;)

The job of moderator is really three fold: First to keep us kids in line, to be a technical resource when you can, and finally to keep things organized. I think this forum is well behaved, and we have lots of great technical experts out there including gmctd, Retmil, Darby and Sir Sam and others. The only reason we really need more moderation is to keep things organized.

Not that I want the job, I'm pretty busy as is, but I'll offer my services as a moderator with the understanding that I am not the technical resource OldNavy, gmctd, Sir Sam or the others are. All I can offer is the ability to keep things organized. I have experience administrating phpBB forums. I just recently started two private phpbb forum's, One for my Air Force buddies and one for my high school class reunion (#30 if you really want to know  ). So I check those two forums daily for new membership and of course posting. I'm usually on this board daily, and am easy to get hold of. You can search my posting history to confirm I'm not a trouble maker.

This is my first Diesel, I love it. I do most of my own routine maintenance and mods. My CRD has only been to the dealer twice, once for F37 and once for the TC. I'm a radio systems engineer by trade, came up through the ranks of bench tech and testing and then back to school for a degree. I like doing my own work and glad to help others if I know anything useful.

Your not going to hurt my feelings if you decide on others, I'm just throwing it out there if your looking for a steady hand as a second or third moderator.

It seems that Wally has pretty much stepped up to the job since ON pretty much bit the dust. I think the moderating is being done just fine and I am not too hip on the moderators who get nit picky about cross posts or take it upon themselves to decide that things should be in a different forum. If it is too big a job for Wally (Darby) alone then I think Sam would d a great job as backup.

I guess some took my comments about keeping threads on topic as meaning intrusive censorship. That was never my intent. Thread drift is one thing. Healthy discussion is great. The occasional poster with a comment out of left field isn't a big deal. The guys who have a problem with a particular topic and insist on crapping in the thread rather than simply not reading it are a problem. The guys who make a habit of name calling are a problem. Some of the long time members here do try to "nudge" these problem threads, but since they have no authority, it just turns into a peeing contest.

As far as the moderation, I once said something to offend someone on here that was not ment to be that way. I was told that it was not in good taste by several people on here who were not moderators at the time. Fixed the problem. I did not have a problem with how it was handled.

I also think the two that have been mentioned are very good choices.

Actually, my interest in accepting would be to continue collecting and correlating data for the Tech section, such as comprehensive DTC lookup table, alphabetical diagnostic list, basic theory and concept - a Mod has the ability to edit threads to extract the tech from the extraneous posts, etc - you guys can shred each other all you want - my task would be to ensure that you at least have the opportunity to be well-informed at the commencement of those proceedings, eh?

I think that would be outstanding. At the end of the day, lemon law threads will stop when there are no more CRDs eligible for lemon law. Warranty denial threads will stop when the last CRD goes out of warranty. The technical aspects will get more and more important as time goes on. I don't know how many are aware of it, but Jeep put a diesel in the Cherokee back in the eighties. I'd like to find somebody who has owned one and ask them how long the dealer supported it.

So the best is to let Darby be the main guy over all like he does already, let Sam assist in the CRD and gmtcd can do the CRD Tech. Life is sweet

Sam.

Those 80's XJ's used Renult diesels when AMC was controlled by them. The early small Winnebago used them also before they started using the VW Eurovan chassis. The heads were fragile. A goggle search will find a couple of places for engine parts for the winnie.

There is a member on our XJ forum from portugal with one, says it still runs at 200k miles, but says its pretty gutless.

Gutless is a relative term. When you realize it's 2.1 litres (thats french) pushing around the likes of an XJ, it's pretty good. Mine would ride from Pueblo to Cheyenne on I-25 (that's 4500 to 7500 feet altitude for those unfamiliar) in 5th gear, 4 people, 55 to 75 MPH, 150,000 miles on the clock, with the cruise on the whole time (never had to downshift).

I've driven a lot of other cars that wouldn't do that........... Oh, and it got 29+ miles to the gallon to boot!

Although I love this site, I think the search feature is the worst one I've seen I always get crap that is random. The SVO forum has the best search feature I've seen so far and I believe its the same forum software. With that said, I don't think we need more moderation. This group is all adults, and typically acts like the same.

Anyone else find the irony in the way that this thread managed to deviate from the initial thread just like most here do?

A little.

Thanks to all that participated in the poll. I think the discussion was worthwhile at least. The results were pretty steady. It stayed 2 to 1 against more or less the whole time.
