Exit stage right.

Ed as you may or may not know, Kings make OME, the heavy duty King spring is basically the OME948, and a lot of folks have no issue with the OME, CRDSTU himself still has his original OME948's in the rear of his, and it has plenty of lift with no sign of sag. But as I and CDKJ have found the issue comes from compression and overcompression, when theres a load in the rear and you drive on those corrugated outback roads for 100's or in my case 1000's of km's they just don't hold up. We live and learn and with any luck this will solve my hassles.

You may also see in the pics CD posted up of the rear coils, the nice big bumpstops I now have at the base of the coils. They are about 35-40mm high and are made from a high desity rubber hammer, they will also help as I will now not get the overcompression I did before, and the limiting of flex I get from the extra bumpstops will be more than compesated for by the longer coils and soon longer shockies. All this together with the 31/10.5/15's and taking off the front swaybar, this should be an even more capible 4x4 than it was before.

I was under the impression the OME and Kings were not the same specs and that the OME's were manufactured by kings to OME specs.

I guess I'll have to wait for mine to sag

You guys got me thinking, I wasn't sure if I walk with a 10 degree list to the starboard or if my lifts gone all saggy!

Tale of the tape...
Front R/L 545 / 520
Rear R/L 565 / 550

On a Slope?? No.. the ground was fairly level, I took one set of measurement then turned the car 180 degrees.. no donuts.. just drive out and backin facing the other way then averaged the numbers.

Thats with no load... Looks like I need to take a closer look at this... Maybe a sign of advancing age or something has come loose!
Thanks for the numbers, I have the OMEs medium duty ones front and rear (Petrol donk so didn't need the stffer ones)
Would the King ones be more suited up front on the diesel, than on a petrol??

Brian, even with the petrol, my personal belief is that if you also have the ARB bar you need to have the heavy duty coils in the front, otherwise same thing will happen, overcompression and sagging. If you have sagged on one side at the front that could easily account for the differewnce in the rear.

Don't know the full details of your lift, but, check wheather or not you have a clevis lift in the front as well as the coil lift, and, its also possible that if they did do the clevis lift and did not use conduit nuts to space it, that one side could let the strut slip back down, that would drop the front in the amounts you are talking. Other thing is the rubber coil retainer at the base of the coil on the strut assembly itself, maybe cracked and degraded to the point of splitting. Worth having a look at I'd say.

The Kings springs that CRDSTU designed specifically for the CRD I would imagine would indeed be overkill on a petrol, even with a ARB bullbar and a winch, But if you do have a bar I think the heavy duty ones that were originally designed for the CRD are the pick (I have the OME heavy duty one in my front end and they are still sitting as high as they were 2yrs ago and the ride is excellent), with a petrol and NO Bar - the mediums would be the pick.

Gday Everyone, I just thought i'd jump on and help you guys out with a few things.

yes, Kings make OME coils, but OME design them to their own spec, Kings purely manufacture them.

The KJ King coils on the shelf are a completely different design to the OME ones available.

My CRDSTU front H/D coils made by Kings are perfect for a PETROL KJ with ARB or eqiv STEEL BAR and / or winch. The are also perfect for the CRD with or without an ARB Bar / Winch. Id always recommend my Laser Cut front Strut plate of course as it does give slightly more downwards travel as well.

My Current Prototype CRDSTU REAR HD coils that are in cmorh's car are working perfectly. I was nervous as to the height that it would raise to when 1/2 of the load was removed (therefore converting back to daily travelling loads) but to my reassureance it was actually 565mm. Im sure it would go upto around 580mm on an empty stock KJ which is a warning to those out there who think it would give them the ultimate 5" lift !! lol!

As for the ride, cmohr is yet to have my custom OME Super Long Travel shocks fitted. Im waiting on the H/D Crush tubes to be machined - which I will show you photos of when we fit them to cmorh's KJ. The difference between what is in his car and its condition with plenty of 4WD use, compared to what I put in will astound you. Its these little things that can really stuff your trip to the outback that shouldnt be overlooked. The coils do not ride stiff as far as im concerned - its the shock & coil COMBO that dicate your lift so i'll reserve my comment on the ride untill my shocks are on. Just keep remembering, THIS COIL IS DESIGNED FOR CONSTANT LOAD AND OR TOURING WITH A CARAVAN ect.

More news as it happens,

Cheers
Stu :)

hehe! Laughing with you CPC not at you :p !

The crush tubes are the ones found in the mounts of the shocks, only the 'eye' type shock mount of course. I dont have a pic on this home PC but my one at work has the photo to explain. I'll dig it up tomorrow and show you.

I just placed an order with STU for a set, looking forward to no more packers/spacers.

(My current setup was one reason why I never got a fuel tank skid plate. That wont be an issue in the next few weeks  Still wont get one till the dust settles on our new place and I see if I need a 2nd job  )

STU, order is on your LOST pm.

My lift was a Suburban 3 1/2 which had turned up spacers, struts look even must be the springs as the ARB bull is very heavy.
Will probably get a set also, backs are 948 and still look OK.
I'll be interested to see how your shockies go.

Not yet, bit of a delay in the springs. Hopefully this friday night.

Should we lift one side at a time when doing the front strut top plates or just lift up the whole front end?

Hmmm, Stu would be the guy to really know, myself, I'd probably do one side at a time, learn whilst doing the first side to make the second side easier.
