 Post subject: transmission problem?

Over the last weekend I took a 800 mile trip in our CRD. Even though the car ran great there was some strange shifting behavior. Last friday evening after a 2 hour crawl on the Cross Bronx expressway I finally made it over the George Washington bridge into NJ. When I could finally accelerate to around 55-60 mph I noticed the rpm were registering about 2800 rather than the usual 1800. At that point I had few options so I kept driving until I came the a service center. After a brief stop we resumed our trip and the CRD shifted normally for the remainder of the weekend including the return trip. There was no stop and go on the return just steady 70-75 mph. My wifes drives the CRD most of the time. When this happened she informed me that it behaved similar several weeks ago. After stopping and restarting it began to shift normally again.

Any idea what the problem could be? Is it likely to leave us stranded? Since I'm running ORM I checked the codes before leaving and there were no unexpected codes. This is a 2005 with 49,000 miles and it has had the F-37. By the way it got what I consider good mileage > 25, The last tank I calculated > 27, but that was after a fill up in NJ where the attendant pumps the fuel. So I think he didn't put in as much as I do.

Is it possible that you hit the overdrive off button on the side of the shifter?

The o/d cancel button is most likely, it resets when the ignition is turned off.
Have you checked the transmission fluid level lately?
We lost a motor because we did not check the motor oil when the oil cap was left off. I dislike rewarding bad behavior but the wife is worth a lot more than the price of a car. It was just so darn inconvenient.

Nope, absolutely not. The OD button was the first thing I checked. When I noticed the rise in rpm I checked and cycled the button. I tried slowing down and accelerating through the range where the shift would normally occur. Since I was also somewhat lost in north NJ I had to get off the highway and stop at several stop signs. From a stop the car appeared to shift in the lower gears correctly. The thing I didn't do at the time was shut the car off. I'll check the codes tonight with the VAG-COM. It's happened twice now, it'll happen again. I just don't like the idea of being on a extended trip and having to cruise at 55 when the engine turning 1000 rpms more that usual. I realize this is probably a transmission problem but it would be scary to breakdown in a state like NY where they've never seen a CRD.

Probably because of high transmission oil temp it kept you from going into OD. Not sure if you get a trans temp warning light for that as well, but in the manual it does say it will protect itself from rape if it begins to overheat. There are more than just one stage on this. There's normal, reduced and limp mode IIRC.

Hmm, That's an interesting idea. I believe there is a trans temperature warning light. There were no warning lights on at the time and I believe I saw the trans temp symbol at startup. I was pushing it pretty hard on the return trip and it stayed locked in OD and it seemed to shift normally through all gears. I'll also check the level again.

Yep this is what my manual says.

It's in danish, but no worries, I know a translator:

Setting "Over temperature"

The transmission electronics constantly monitors the temperature of the transmission fluid. If the transmission becomes too hot, the gear change pattern is changed to relax this condition. This might cause the car to change shift pattern or react differently during normal driving in the position "D" (drive). If the transmssion becomes sufficiently hot the "TRANS TEMP" warning light illuminates. When the transmission cools down it will resume normal operation.

The T/S is a POS and getting it replaced it is the first thing I will do before any more power improvements 'happen' to this little CRD.
Miles since tranny service?
I think there are 2 filters and a plastic torque converter (T/C) in the tranny.
I just found the real "Search" thingy in the header next to Private Messages and FAQ.

I scanned the codes and this is what is current set.

P0700 - MIL Request from Trans Control Module (SAE) or Control Module Defective
P0725 RPM Signal from ECU Circuit Failure

The fluid level is correct.

I guess it's time to make an appointment with the dealer.
