Big companies like our domestic automotive companies care more about cutting costs than building what we want to buy. When ever the engineers can get something past the bean counters, they have had a great time. But like every political situation, defeat your opponent and there is payback and winning the company political squabble matters more to them than the life of the company.
Companies like BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, AUDI, and VW stress engineering more and do not see it as a necessary evil as the US auto companies do. What we can all do that would get back to the big cats would be to walk into the show room ready to buy asking for what we want, when they spout their worn out script citing "EMISSIONS" and do not deliver, tell them what we want again and walk out the door. When they hear that enough, the dealers will raise hell and the Fat Cats will Listen.
I would like to have a Patriot CRD for my Wife but they don't sell them and I don't have the time or space to pull the TDI along with the needed controls out of a wrecked donor Jetta and install it into a Patriot.
I will not buy the Patriot gasser with a suspect Mitsubishi gasser engine, no way

Her next car will most likely be a Passat or Jetta TDI wagon.
