I took off on sunday and wet my Jeep's feet for the first time. I went to a little place a few miles northwest of Cochitti Lake. It's just past the Dixon Apple orchards, and there was about 10-15 miles of good offroading (for a newbie). First I thought it was going to be desert the whole way, then all of the sudden we were in the forest, which was a pleasant surprise. There were a couple of tough spots where I was sure I would dent my muffler, but I didn't stop to take pics at those places. At the end of the road, after about 10-15 miles, the stupid road forked off, and on the left, there was a true 4x4 path, which was blocked off from unequipped vehicles by a big sharp-cornered boulder, and a little bit of space on the left to pass by, but the grade of the road at the passing point would have tipped my Jeep, so I turned around because the other side of the fork in the road had a private propery gate. There were alot of great camping places out there too, and very few vehicles. There was a stream crossing about every 100 yards too. So, here's the pics:

Looks great man. That is exactly like my KJ. Except now I'm lifted w/ tires. Looks like a great time, wish I would have found that spot.

No, I dont know why I didn't take a pic. But as soon as I have some rock rails and a 2.5" lift, I'm going to go tackle that rock. Here's an illustration:

Could you have put your left-side wheels on the side of the trail and right-side wheels on the rock?

I could have but as soon as the right front wheel came off the rock I would have destroyed my rockers, and that would have made for a very bad day...

Nate, that area up by Dixon apple orchards is really nice. Another nice area is up in the Jemez. Go up past Jemez Pueblo like you are heading to Jemez Springs, and when you get to FR485 you can turn left and head into the mountains. At one point there are a couple of old railroad tunnels the road goes thru. Eventually you can make your way over to Fenton Lake, then back around to Jemez Springs or out to Los Alamos, or if your real adventurous you can go on around thru the forest to Cuba. The drive is about 20 miles on decent dirt roads but after a nice rain its a muddy treat :)

yeah, me and my girlfriend always camp up there between Lake Fenton and San Gregorio lake... But I haven't really been down that road since I bought the jeep, I need to go up that way some day, its only an hour and a half away... I might find where you're talking about... I dont remember a railroad track though... just about 15 miles of grated road... I think they've paved it since though...

Those orchards are real nice. Great pics man, I always love when green stuff lines the road, rare enough in NM.
