Just had my timing belt, belt tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, and serp belt replaced. I now seem to have an issue with the electric fan in front of the radiator. I used to only notice the electric fan running on hot days and I was outside the jeep so I could hear it. It now runs on initial start up when the motor is cold. When it runs like that on initial start up it never goes off until I shut the jeep off.

I put a fia winter cover on it before I had the work done and the fan did not do this just after the work.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the stealership could have done to cause the fan to run so much?

When I did the Suncoast, shift kit and aux. trans cooler, pulled the electric fan out.
When I get hot or use it hard a cool down period at the end is standard operating procedure(SOP).
Or...go back to the Stealership and ask to have it fixed...good luck with that.

You've actually gotten outta the driver's seat, walked around front and observed the aux fan-blades spinning rapidly under power? Or are you hearing increased fan-blow noise from the driver's seat, normal in cold weather where the chilled viscous fluid takes longer to move into the reservoirs to disengage the engine fan-clutch?

Disabling the electric fan will cost you low speed air conditioning. That's how I found out my stealership forgot to plug the bugger in. I had warm air until hitting the freeway.

on cold mornings (northern Indiana) I will start the CRD up and let it warm up before hitting the road. I am noticing the electric fan running on start up when engine is cold on initial start up. Does not make sense to me that it would be running at that point and I have never noticed it doing that before.

The other night I started it up after it had been sitting a couple of hours and the fan turned on as soon as I started the jeep. I ran down to a friends house a couple blocks away and left it running in the driveway for 10 minutes or so. The fan never shut off until I turned the jeep off.

Other times it won't run on initial start up but I can hear it a lot more lately when shutting off the jeep than in the past. When you turn the jeep off you can hear the electric fan winding down.

It just has been running a lot more in this cold weather then I ever noticed it doing last winter.

But have you "seen" it running? Or are you hearing somthing that "sounds" like an electric fan. I once stated in a post that my jeep did not have a mechanical fan because I did not go out and physically check it.

To speed up the defrost the AC compressor runs and therefore the electric fan runs, this helps dry out the air in the cabin and evaporate the windshield frost/fog. When you notice this check to see if the defrost is on, if so, your CRD is doing what all modern cars are designed to do.

On the 06 modles the AC compressor and fan runs when the mode dial is in any position from 12 o'clock (stright up) and clockwise That dries the interior out when it's likely damp or wet. I found this out one crisp dry day and heard the AC compressor sysling on the heat setting. Somewhere there's a thread where you can hack the switch to change how it operates.

...any heat mode. One member modified his heater/AC temp control switch to shut off the AC compressor when heating. If you live in a dry climate, the mod of shutting off the AC in the heat only mode may be a good idea. If you live where you see fog, not so good.

As much as I love to Rip the Big Shots and Bean Counters of Detroit, I have to admit the following topic is where the Big Shots got off their butts and took charge and told the Bean Counters to shut up.

Auto companies cycle the AC compressor when the heat is on because dry air drys out window fog better than moist air.

To put this into perspective to those not smart enough to own or drive a Jeep.

As I explained to a Corporate World/Capitalism hating Subaru driver (Sub Jeep driver) two simple facts:
1) Accidents may result in death. (Fogged up windows can cause accidents)
2) Dead people don't buy cars

The second point left the English Professor speechless with a dumb look on her face.

Of course, all of us knew 1 & 2 already.

yup I am a complete idiot. I drove all day today without the defroster on and guess what? The electric fan didn't run. I can't believe I overlooked that little tid bit when trying to figure out what was going on. Guess I was just thinking the worse after the stealership worked on the jeep.

Thanks guys for pointing out the obvious and not calling me an idiot.
