Can we please get this back on topic!!! I really don't like the fact my thread was hijacked!!! My last question was never answered do to you yahoo's arguing like a bunch of schoolgirls. I really need info from those who this happened to about costs. Thanks.

cost is anywhere from $250 to $600 from what I have seen around here. Labor, not sure what the flat rate calls for not in the garage right now , but we did one here in my garage in 4 or 5 hours and that was taking our time, that should give you a starting point

The Navigator uses an 8.8 R&P with 1.625/28 spline axles. The truck weighs over 5800lbs. Thats definetly stronger than 1.625/26 spline count. The point is to get rid of the weak housing and put something stronger in. Keeping the same ratio is about saving cash. How much cash do you want to throw at a liberty? Not everybody can afford an SAS? The point is to look for solutions to fix the weak link without breaking the bank.

Tell these guys their trackers are junk.

to avoid derailing the fellas thread yet again, let's make a new thread entertaining the idea of a swap of that nature, then you can argue the feasibility and or costs / benefits of that vs. sfa's without derailment

Since you have a CRD, you might want to check in that section.

Cost is probably a little different for being a diesel. Call Jeep Service tomorrow and ask for labor cost. If you buy new diff from them, it will cost a whole lot more than using other auto parts stores.....if anyone else sells them.

I don't have the parts list on my home computer (stupid me) but are the Gas diff's the same as the CRD diff's but then just fitted with different supports and different CV's?

If so...Tom, don't you have one lying around in you garage/warehouse? :D

TJKJ should know how long it takes to change a diff, so you then can calculate what it may cost.

Yes I have an extra but its staying right where it is!

Housing shows the same part number 5066538AA
shaft assemblys are different and mounting brackets of course
Looks like flat rate shows 5.5 hours to R&R
Like I said when we did Jons it should of taken about that time, but someone broke some sockets and then there was lunch

Well guys, I must say I'm in luck and must have found the last truly and exceptionally rare honest dealer. As they admitted to knowing about the TSB on the KJ's front diff, the overabundance of this exact breakage and subsequent lack of parts to fix it. And everything will be covered under the warranty!!! They just told me I have to go back to stock open diffs. Oh well, sure beats the repair bill of close to $2000. Only bad thing is that apparently there is some kind of epidemic of blown front diffs that the housings are now unobtainable with no backorder or date of availability as to when the part will be in stock again, as Chrysler is in talks with all it's suppliers on re-negotiating contracts and such.

Just so you guys know, pulling backwards in most cases is just not a good idea. Get turned around and pull forward if at all possible.

That doesn't sound good at all. Time to stock up on used housings.

Yeh guys, thats the bad part of this. Great it's covered by warranty, but sux that I have no idea on when it will get fixed, as per warranty rules. Only factory new parts can be used in repair of said breakage. I've already talked with the tech who is gonna do the work. And he said if the diff they take out looks and opperates ok, he will just reinstall it and as far as he knows, it was OEM to begin with, and they will just have an extra front diff in stock. So, sorry guys. If the DTT was not harmed in the making of this movie, then it's staying with me and the Liberty it came in!!!

Airpark Jeep in Scottsdale, AZ is where it's getting fixed.

On a side note I have been thinking about that day and exact moment this happened for several days now. And with a clouded mind, my 1st account of how this happened is not entirely accurate. I was in a steady, no tire spinning pull backwards, and now I've had time to reflect, I remember the truck I was pulling out shifted and pulled the KJ forward with it's weight, and thats the exact moment the "BANG" happened. I thought at 1st it was a broke strap. But obviously alot worse. Everything was in a pretty hard pull, and the turbo was spooled trying to muscle the truck out of the ditch, and that little bit of weight shift forward while in reverse, with the turbo spooled, is surely what grenaded the diff. I guess it was just enough of a shock load in this high traction situation with the CRD's torque output at low rpm's, to split the case wide open.

It became clear to me after reading AZscout's thread about how his broke. The words "turbo whine" got stuck in my head, and I remember very distinctly how mine sounded while under heavy load, straining against the strap trying to unstuck the Ranger.
