Those snorkels look cool and I am sure that they deliver the goods!
But, for the $900.00 to $1100.00 that one shop here wants for a snorkel, they are out to lunch.
Most every snorkel equipped 4X4 in town are total poser's, mall crawlers, or call them what ever!
Not a scratch on a skid plate or a speck of mud underneath. Let alone extended breather lines.
I've been 4X4 ing for a long time and have never needed one and done plenty of water
crossings as well.
I like what the guy's in their Suzuki Samurai's around here use, and works very well.
(I should add that several CJ, TJ, XJ, etc. Uses the same home made snorkels as well around here.)
Either 3 inch or 4 inch wire re-reinforced RV sewage hose, with a K&N or other cleanable air filter
hose clamped on. Or 3 inch black PVC plumbing pipe with a home brew air intake as well as an
exhaust pipe extension with a hinged flapper cap on top so gasses can come and go as required.
Back yard innovation instead of another credit card receipt!
Not to mention that some of the home made versions look way more cooler than what you can
order off of the internet!

they told you it would be that much for a snorkel for the KJ??

they dont even sell them for the KJ, Dirk at DPG Off-Road is the only person in the US who sells them for the KJ, and IIRC they are $350 or so

I have mine mostly for touring so as to get good clean cold air in. Then or course theres the water thing....

Plus, in particularly dusty conditions you can also get a pre-filter that goes over the intake scoop that gets rid of all the big stuff, before it gets down to the airbox... It also stops frongs and spiders hiding in there..

I have heard that they are better for dust prevention and that they help in water crossings obviously, but there is so much more needed to make our jeep able to ford water that high than just a snorkel. Seems like a good air filter would block enough dust as well. So I wonder why bother?

I seriously want to know and I'm not trying to be a jerk or smart a-- about it either.

ThunderbirdJunkie has successfully destroyed two engines due to water ingestion, and a 3.7 is far pricier to replace than a 2.8 GM V6 in an Isuzu Trooper or a 3.0 V6 in a Mitsu Montero.

And had ThunderbirdJunkie snorkeled either one of those, he still would have saved more money than what he spent on the rebuild/replacement.

Plus, it was worth the price just for the reactions. a TJ on 35s driven by a guy that must have been cross-bred with an owl, because his neck snapped around REAL quick when he saw the KJ's snorkel. People asking "WHAT'S THAT?" or the salesman at the Chrysler stealer professing himself as a "hard core Jeep guy" and then asking why the exhaust was coming out of the fender.

It's a great investment, even if you never use it.

Honest answer, thank you.

What about you 0311_Doc or JLRockies?

I did it because all the trails are under water in FL. I also extended all of my breathers.

The snorkel was my first mod due to getting about two inches of water and mud in my airbox at Eglin AFB.
This was too close for my comfort.A gasser might be able to be salvaged, but a diesel-saionara.
Besides,I found LOST while doing a search for liberty snorkels. :D

350  I paid over 7bills.Dirk did tell me at the time that mine was one of the first few that he's sold.
Guessing they went down some since they are a hot item.
At least if I rip mine off one day it'll only cost half to replace it.

Thanks guys. You're making me want to start spending money on the KJ again... :P

Alas, there's no real reason to. Poor thing hasn't seen a trail since I was out in Louisiana with jasonthompson and the LA4x4 guys back in 2007.

Remember now, I live in B.C., Canada! (B.C.= Bring Cash!)
British Columbia Canada.
Everything that is specialized for a vehicle in Canada (Even more so in British Columbia) is at least 50 to 150% more money!
After Provincial tax and Federal Goods and Services tax, and Brokerage fee's, and currency exchange rates, my Al's A Arms set me back very close to $600.00 dollars Canadian!
Then there is the Frankenlift.
Detours Backbone.
Spider Trax wheel spacers.
Etc., etc., etc.
So yeah, One of the local shops here wants between $900.00 and $1100.00 Canadian dollars for a snorkel!

Another local 4X4 shop wants $1400.00 for four (4) OME coil springs and 2 struts, and 2 shocks!

Brutal isn't it?

Cheers

Ry'

No doubt eh?
Actually, Canuk buck is at about $1.11 CDN for one U.S. Dollar
A prime example of a big difference in price.
Last time I was at Wal mart in Washington State
Hella 500 driving lights $ 54.99
Hella 500FF driving lights $ 64.99
Flee bay: from $22.00 to $55.00!
At a local auto parts store here in the lower mainland of Vancouver B.C. $189.99 per pair! Exact same lamps.
Thats just a rip off!
Bosch 225 Ralley lamps.
http://rb-aa.bosch.com/aa-pl/en/static/ ... rallye.htm
I have four of these on my 1976 British Leyland Rally Mini.
$49.97 each in the U.S.A. with plastic lamp cover
$349.99 Canadian dollars each! Plastic lamp cover $49.99 each!
Why?
It's no wonder I buy everything out of the States!

Ok, so I am thinking the same as INC, but if you do tend to drive through rivers and such on a regular basis I can see the use of one of these.

( I wont start on how I think they look on a KJ, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder...)

Having an '02 I already have a mini snork under the hood and if the water ever comes that high...I took the wrong trail for sure!

Now...how do you get the airbox out after you rtv'ed everything together?

( if you ever want to take the RH strut out, do you have to rip the snork of????)

Same way you do now.

And water over the hood is not that uncommon...KJ's ain't all that tall

having a snorkel does not mean you can go through deeper water, even extending the breathers also does not mean you can go through deeper water. There much more you need to do to be able to safely ford deeper water in a KJ.Just don't get that mind set that "hey I have a snorkel so I must be able to go through 4'+ deep water",it just is not so and you will pay for it in some hefty repair bills.
