Now they just have increased China's economy since now most of the aftermarket parts needed, due to so many vehicles being crushed instead of parted out, will come from China since most are to cheap to buy quality parts made in the USA which cost a few dollars more.

Which dovetails beautifully into my point -- No more cheap, good, used, American-made parts,... instead, suspect quality Chinese made "new" after-market parts for our vehicles. How is this stimulating the American economy again, or helping the environment?

In all seriousness, what USED parts do YOU want to use to keep your vehicle on the road that would otherwise be replaced by Chinese stuff?

Tie rod ends? You'd really trust used front end parts?
What about coil packs? Perhaps you'd like some used universal joints? How about used brake rotors and pads?

If we were talking classics...which we are decidedly not...you may have a point...but we're talking about reasonably new vehicles that have replacement parts commonly available.

The vehicles being traded in at ThunderbirdJunkie's local lots are mostly junk. The aforementioned 89 Dakota, a veritable cornucopia of decade-plus-old minivans, a couple fullsize vans, and a rotted out MJ (that, the Dakota, and the following are the only memorable ones). The one odd duck is a 99ish WJ limited, but it looks pretty hurt. None of them are what ThunderbirdJunkie would even consider paying more than a few hundred bucks for, save for the WJ...which might fetch a cool grand from his wallet...on a good day...

mostly just drive train items

the ones that if you can't locate and have to buy new or 'new'-rebuilt end up costing you 4 times what you would have paid at the pick'n'pull

which hits you in the pocket giving you less money to spend on other things

and also the people who's job it is to sell pick'n'pull parts, if the body parts etc aren't in their yard because they're crushed somewhere they don't make money

but I suppose the recycling plant folk do

i think the argument AND the whole idea of it being done is shaped like a doughnut

one goes round.. the other has the hole in the middle..

Again, we are not talking about NOW, I was talking about the future availability. Example, I have a buddy with a '94 XJ with 240K miles on it. He has not bought a new OEM part for this in 10 years and has saved a fortune. He and I have gone to the pull-a-part places to replace seats, A/C controls, knobs, switches, headliners, and gotten spring packs to build his lift. Almost everything else he has needed has been rebuilt parts as well, with the exception of consumables like breakpads, etc.

I think you are missing my point. I don't want or care about the whole vehicles, but there are ALWAYS things that can be used off old and worn out vehicles. More so if it is a Chrysler product since so many of their vehicles have been put together out of the common parts bins.

Well, for anyone interested, as of Sunday evening, most dealerships have stopped the cashs for clunkers program. I have a buddy in N Ky that is a salesman, he told me the govnt is not paying for the vouchers that the dealers are giving out. Guess they just have to wait for "the Boss" to give orders to print more money.

you know the great thing about this is all the relatively good cars being destroyed would probably be better served being on the market for those individuals who can't afford a new car (cause chances are that the "clunker" is better than what they are already driving). if everyone who has a car that is worth less than $3500 would trade in there "clunker", you would nearly wipe out the supply of cars for $3500 or less (why sell it for $1500 when big brother will give you $3500?).....i guess it is kind of like a minimum wage for cars....what a great idea!

how many people paid more than $3500 for their first vehicle?....i didn't

95% of the vehicles I've owned(about 45-50) have been bought for less then $500,some were even free.Only 4 vehicles I've ever owned have cost more,my '84 F150($2000 in '90),'96 Taurus($8000 in '98 ),'01 Grand($16,000 in '01),and my '02 KJ($17,000 in '02).

Out of boredom on Sunday I went driving through some of the dealers in my area looking for KJ with skids or tow hooks to try and get my hands, I talked the dealer I go to all the time and they said they don't have any KJ's, but driving through the lot I saw a lot of XJ's some of them pretty nice.

The dealership said parts like that I could take just engine componets I couldn't have.

I'm sorry but that isn't really new or surprising information. :? "The Government has malware and cookies and watch you and what your doing." Yea ok, they've been able to do that legally since the Bush administration passed the Homeland Security Act, and they were doing it for years before that illegally. Not to mention the number of private corporations that do it illegally every day to attempt to gain personal information (browsing habits, sales, marketing ect.) Check your temporary internet folder and cookies folder for each browser right now, you'll be surprised at how many people are "watching" you.

If the gubment has nothing better to do than go through ThunderbirdJunkie's pirated music and movies, Jeep/car/RC related internet cookies, and looking at his Jeep/RC spending habits, we've got serious problems that are bigger than interweb surfings.

ThunderbirdJunkie has paid good money for two cars in his life. Intial purchase on all but two, much like Troy, (the KJ and, of all things, a Chevy Corsica) have been $500 or less.

Now...the money that has been put into some of them

Honda dealership I work at has a 91 Grand Wagoneer.... looks to be in good shape- very little rust, interior is perfect, didn't start it up but it said to run good. Clunker. Shame.

It's not that they are looking but that they claim that your PC and everything on it is their property if you click agree! Watch it again. I did notice Glen said "when the dealer clicks" so this might only pertain to dealerships who participate in CARS. Of course that would mean that the Gubment would then own all the dealers computers and everything on them. still not cool. I can't believe nobody else is saying anything about it.

if you are trading in a clunker, then your info would be on that computer that is now govt property.

Big brother is already watching you in more way then you will ever know, or want to know. That's why Burchie dresses in front of the window with the blinds open. If you don't want to see, don't look, but since you are, you might as well get a good look.

oh baby. Shake that money maker.

You are missing the point! It's not about the information, it's about them claiming ownership of the COMPUTER and all the data on it if you agree to participate in CARS. :!: What gives them the right to just claim ownership of your property and who slid that thing into the bill? Who ever authored that part of the bill should be exposed and ousted from office. They have a very bad case of BigBrotheritis!

ya actually thought they 'Read' the bill before passing it?

it's not as important who put that clause in there.. as it is that our reps be ******* punished severely for passing legislation after legislation without reading it or having a clue what's on page 20.
