K&N 63 series Aircharger

Mike08 - didn't realize you had a 63 series K&N Aircharger, I was just looking at it online.

Is it an Oiled filter and does that void the Jeep powertrain warranty? I'm curious, as the K&N is the only intake that seems to provide a dyno chart to support some of their claims. Opinions?

Yes I do have it and I haven't had any problems with it. It's been great! According to K&N their intake systems will NOT void your warranty. I know a lot of car dealers will sell K&N systems as an aftermarket add-on.

to be honest i i would go with the aem bruteforce... i think its a nicer easier set up and although there are no dyno charts, i can tell there is alot more power so there is defiantly an increase in hp

the K&N 63 series specifically states that it is not street legal in California and some other states.

Their 77 series says it has a CARB exemption, and does not have the above warning.

I'd be hesitant to put the 63 series on my Jeep. Mopar makes a similar intake system, I'm pretty sure it's street legal and does not void any warranties

but which are they selling? the 63 series or the 77 series? The K&N web site states that the 63 series is not street legal in CA and some other states. I really doubt that a franchised automotive dealer will install a 63 series as an aftermarket add-on.

I just noticed, the original poster is from Canada.. maybe they don't have the same polution and emissions rules as we have here, so maybe the 63 series would be legal up there, who knows?

however, if you look at the specs page for the 77 series, it says it's not CARB exempt. However, the instructions sheet says that the last thing you have to do is to install the CARB sticker so it can be visible when you get a smog check.

They show a 1.24 horsepower difference betwen the 63 and 77 series. I wonder what the difference is? One appears to have plastic intake tube and the other is polished aluminium.

Well if it was CARD Exempt no sticker would be needed.
So that is why they got the Card number and give you a sticker.

I tell everyone who lives in CA, do your research on CARB, OE numbers, double check them and talk with Smog shop first. Good shops will see the number and do a smog or check online.
Bad shop with lazy people will not do the service, these guys are scum bags.

Use this to see if part really have a CARB number before buying.

on-topic ... I just called K&N, here is what they said ... In regards to the "63 Series Intake Kits are not legal for street use in California and some other U.S. states." this statement also applies to some of the 77 series intakes. You would have to call K&N on an individual basis and they would look up your particular part number and let you know if it is or isn't. Because the 63 series makes more power they are having issues with Cali's strict smog laws.

The main difference in the 2 is that the 63 series is a black plastic tube which does not take on heat. Thus making more power. The 77 is a polished aluminum tube that does take on heat which lower the power numbers.

I know this is a bad idea, but can those 77 tubes be ceramic coated?
if so that might help. not sure, but I knowit works on exhuast syste, but it might be differant metals we are talking about.

You could put heat shields on a 77 series that reflects the heat away.
but that might look ugly...

Ceramic coating could get expensive. A cheaper, faster and easier option would be to wrap it with exhaust wrap.

My AFE composite air tube is wrapped with header wrap(then a wrap of black electrical tape to make pretty).Though I scrapped the oiled air filter in favor of the AEM dryflow synthetic filter long ago.

As far as any oiled air filter they will play hell with MAF sensors(why Ford has in there owners manuals that any oiled air filter voids warranty) which I have had to deal with on many Fords and Chevys(customers vehicles).They do flow very well,but don't filter very well which is the drawback of having more flow.Oiled air filters are great for racing but for the long run not the greatest for a DD.It may take some miles but your engine will not last as long as it could have if you used a non-oiled air filter.Just my personal experience and opinion.
