As a new resident of Minnesota, I feel that I need to experience all the different facets of this new culture. Whether it's eating hotdish, using the term "out state", or ice fishing, I'm willing to give it a try. So, last weekend we took a short trip to White Bear Lake, just northeast of the cities and went out on the ice with some friends. They don't have an icehouse, so we were just out there in the cold. It was very windy. And there were no fish... But, we got to eat some pudgy pies, drink some adult beverages and stand around a fire, so it was a good time! I even drove the Jeep out on the ice, which I didn't really realize was a normal thing around here, but there were tons of pickups on the ice and they had plowed a road through the snow across the lake, so I guess it was ok! Take a look at the pics below.

Driving on the lakes is always fun.

As for the fish... It's WBL... Nothing worth while there...lol. kidding.

http://www.minnesotaoutdoornews.com/art ... news01.txt

NORTHEAST METRO

Walleyes continue to be caught during low-light periods in 15 feet at Jarvis Lake and in 20 feet at White Bear Lake. Look for crappies in 10 to 12 feet at Demonterville Lake, in 18 feet at Centerville Lake, and in 10 feet at Lake Peltier. Crappies and white bass are being found suspended over 30 to 40 feet on the St. Croix River. Northern pike are an easy catch with sucker minnows on Lake Jane and Centerville Lake.

Blue Ribbon Bait & Tackle (651) 777-2421

If you want some tips.

1. You were out a little too deep. Try looking at the lake maps that you can find in the local bait shops. Stay on top of any sudden drops, and between 5 and 20 feet of water, depending on what you are looking for.

2. The bobber in the pic was a little on the big side. Try something a lot smaller. More along the lines of just big enough to stay afloat, from the natural weight of your setup (hook, line, sinker (keep them small too), and bait.

3. Northerns will eat anything they want to.

If you plan on fishing a lot, invest in an underwater camera... Cabela's has their name on one, and it is very handy. (This comes from a guy that spends at least 3 days a week fishing (aka :juggle: :ALONE: ) various areas around the metro, and up to Ottertail... -My Dad

Just my :2cents: , but almost everyone will tell you differently.

MNKK,

This was really just a casual outing with some friends. I'm not by any means a fisherman. In fact, I can't even remember the last time I had fished before this. But, thanks for the advice, you really seem to know your stuff!

Wait... there's people in MN that don't fish???

Do you remember that Pace Picante commercial? :!:

Do yourself a favor and don't tell anyone that you don't fish, or anything of the sort... Just smile and nod... throw an "ohh yaa, you betcha!" in there, then just move along...

I'm kidding... that's home for me. As much as I do miss it, I truely don't.

:-)r Hillarious and true in every way. Just to set the record straight, I've only lived here for 6 months, so it's not like I'm a native that doesn't fish...
