Still saying to each their own.... but, seriously, tjkj, you got this all started by critiquing me for the couple hundred dollars worth of mods that I did to increase the durability (Samcos, Fuel Filter Head, GDE) and efficiency (GDE, muffler) of this engine, all for right around $1k total? I'm pretty much done, this baby is ready to drive until the doors fall off.... I am completely satisfied, and I pull down 40% more mpgs than a gasser KJ - yep, I have a green thumb; this is the most important factor for me.
Now, lets turn the mirror around. You invested how much in an SFA conversion to make your KJ have better offroading capabilities (I would've bought a different Jeep if I really wanted to go offroad)... and now you're investing how much $$$ so that you can have unnecessary amounts of power for something with such a short wheel base? Some CRD owners regularly tow 6k-7k lbs (yea, the weight of your KJ, which you claim our engine wouldn't handle well on its own) and I wouldn't ever want to tow more than that with something this small - that's why I sold my old Cummins.
I'm glad you enjoy your KJ, but let's not attack CRD owners for the minor moding they do in order to get their vehicles up to whatever their personal requirements are - for me: minor offroading, great towing, great mpg - when you're dropping thousands to make your gasser fit your requirements... I bought my CRD knowing that, for a small investment, it could be the perfect vehicle for my needs - it is, and there is nothing else quite like it in my price range. If I wanted insane offroading, I would've gone for a different Jeep; if I wanted insane towing, I would've kept my Cummins.
A small diesel is just not as reliable(yet),sorry to say but those mods you all do is to keep the dang thing running,I can read and scanned the CRD section. You need this mod so this doesn't happen, then you need this mod to keep this part from breaking. It's all in clear(well most of the time) English in this section.Don't start with the VW TDI's,there junk, can't keep a cam in them to save there lives, and yes I've seen it with my own eyes on a few that I've had to diagnose.Every vehicle has it's problems, can't get away from that and from experience from turning wrenches professionally for 13+ years I know what vehicles to stay away from.
As far as using a different Jeep to wheel with, well I actually hate Wranglers, everyone and there dog has one and a 10 year old girl can mod one.No thinking or effort required.I like a challenge and being different.Beside for what I want in a vehicle would have still cost the same amount of money to do on a Wrangler, and it was much more fun to do it on a KJ though.
