Good point Alljeep. My understanding is that you can't have the rear hitch AND rear tow hook (regardless of skids). It's one or the other. I certainly wasn't planning on replacing my factory tow hitch with a little hook. For recovery, I'm going to get one of those receiver shackles like you have.
Your comment brings an interesting thought to mind. Perhaps I should add front and rear tow hooks to the shopping list. Most people looking for Mopar skids might also be looking for Mopar hooks. Protection and recovery are the first logical upgrades to any off-road vehicle...right?
Here's the listing from Mopar.com. I know we can find these cheaper somewhere...
82206124 - Black, front, 5,000-lb capacity, set of 2 - $99.00
82206125 - Black, rear, single hook, for use without Hitch Receiver only, 5,000-lb capacity - $79.00
This is so cool because I've just been through all of this skid thought process. Anyhow, the front mount hitch you ordered, like mine, has 6/10" thick tow loops on it that can handle every bit of 9000lb line tension load. The MOPAR front tow hooks use the same mounting place, so it's either a front hitch, or tow hooks - just like the rear hitch situation. If you remember the picture I posted somewhere, I went to Tractor Supply Co. and put some 9,200lb shackle hooks on the tow loops. Now I've got recovery points front and back AND still an open front hitch for accessories.
As for the MOPAR skids, go to jparts.com and order them online for 10 or 15 percent below price and get free shipping for orders over $75. When I ordered last year it was free shipping for orders over $200, so I got all my skids at once AND the rubber floor mats. Getting all that heavy steel shipped for free is a HUGE savings.
I would not dbout that yours and my CRD sat next to each other on the finish lot of Jeep since they were such close build dates. We both had a factory hitch, but no skid plate group. At first I thought this was bad, but I much prefer having the option of the front mount hitch with the tow loops on it!
Let me find the picture...
Those hooks have a removeable slide bolt held on by a cotter pin. Easy 2 second install. You can get these shackle grab hooks or shackle slip hooks (with the bigger opening). My grab hooks are more intended for chain use, but a tow strap works fine with them as well. They can pivot on the tow loops and allow for a somewhat easier recovery. Plus, the force of the strap is through the entire front mount hitch, not just a factory, 3-bolt tow hook.
What do you think?
I'll help you install it if your ever up here. Maybe you can help me get the sheared bolt out of my rear differential housing - man - that was a stupid move...
