 Post subject: question about recovery with rear hitch

so i was looking around and i found a hitch attachment that allows you to hook up a winch?... any thoughts?

i thought it was a great idea also. i was gonna get a front hitch also so i could swap it from side to side. then realized with it attached on either side i would KILL my approach and departure angles. what if whatever end i needed it on was buried in mud or on a slope to where i could get it mounted. sounds genius at first, maybe still is for some applications but then i realized for ours we are better off not wasting the money.

Most fail to realize that the KJ with a rear hitched is rated at 5000lbs(conservative rating for safety).Your pushing the limits of that hitch and those 6 bolts(and one 1/2" pin) pulling yourself out of a mud hole,plus you have to run heavy gauge wire all the way back there.

thats what i thought tjkj... i know its only rated at 5000 pounds but then i thought well if i got stuck, I partially rely on that as a recovery point and i expect to be able ot be recovered from there as well as my front hooks. i mean i know you get winces of higher rating so they can handle the stress. as far at the approach and departure angles well i would only put it in if i needed it... keep it in the trunk and if i got stuck hook it up. as far as the heavy guage wire is concerned i do agree that would be a pain. almost worth buying another battery at that rate and then just charging it when i need it. guess it was an idea... maybe if i ever need a light weight winch in the future.... thanks

other than the 5k issue, anything on a carrier pretty much has to be used in as straight of a pull as possible or it can fail a lot sooner than 5k

not sure how much those portable electric winches are, the type that you'd attach to a recovery point such as a clevis, but if you end up leaning towards something around 5k, perhaps that would be a suitable option for rear self recovery

i've only used one once or twice and it was just to pull a tractor up onto a 5th wheel ag trailer, tractor had a busted rear diff so the rear wheels were draggin, the tractor weighed about 8k, had to drag it up those slotted metal drop ramps onto the trailer and the little 4k electric was straining but pulled it up, no idea what the pull would have came out to, probably pretty close to 4k at the hardest tug, i have no idea

just a thought
