I understand it's caused by the high pressure and heat from our common rail system as it goes through the pressure regulator valve

Who told you that?? I believe most of it is just good old dirt, asphaltines, and microbes.

OK here's a link. Read it and weep :goink:

Before you start I invite you to open your filter and see for yourself :SOMBRERO:
I've opened a number of diesel fuel filters on non common rail systems over the years and have never seen anything like this.

Interesting. I recently ran a can of Diesel Purge through both my 150,000 mile TDI and 80,000 mile CRD. During the purge, I had a small, clear inline fuel filter in the supply to the engine. I poured the purge into a 1 quart glass jar and that becomes the "fuel tank" until the purge is used up.

The TDI left the inline filter looking like it was unused. After the CRD, the inline filter had a definite coating of black "stuff". Not a large amount, but it was certainly noticeable compared to the TDI.

I do know that when I changed my TDI nozzles a few weeks ago, along with a buddy with a TDI with similar mileage, my needles looked very clean while his had a heavy buildup of varnish. I'd run Diesel Purge, he had not. Both of us run other fuel treatments occasionally, so the comparison is pretty valid.

I do believe asphaltenes was on my list. It's also a problem with your fuel and not the fuel system. South American crude oil is known to have a higher concentration.

Yes it was.
BUT did you look at the nice black filterng media :?: It can't be doing the rest of the system any good.
And did you read this happens with elevated fuel temperatures :?: Yes I read it does not happen with all fuels just "most".
How does the temperature get elevated to cause this to happen?
Must be the elevated pressure of our common rail fuel system.

I'm in the habit of changing oil and filters at half the recommended intervals do to my short trip and limited miles per year. My last filter change at 12k miles looked like the one in the picture :dizzy: l

Anyone else changed their fuel filter and looked inside of it?, Go ahead and unroll the media

I did mine from the top; it was very easy, and not terribly messy. I put an old plastic baggie over the entire filter, and then used a filter wrench over that. Came out with no muss, no fuss.

Same here!
The plastic baggie trick works great. 8)
It is a tight area to work in and you can't get a regular filter wrench in there. I picked up a strap oil filter wrench cheap with a bunch of junk at a garage sale, turned out to be real handy for this job. It doesn't take much to get it loose. But if you don't have anything to grip the filter with it doesn't budge! :banghead:
I pre-fill the filter with fuel, lubricate the seal, and reinstall. (don't over tighten) It doesn't take much priming. I have even forgotten to bleed it and it still started easily.
I change the fuel filter at 25,000 miles the same time I change my AMSOIL oil and oil filter. I use biodiesel which is a lubricant and a solvent so my system is pretty clean.
