I changed out my diffs around 5000 miles and then have been doing it at 30,000 miles since using synthetics. Not sure that the 12K intervals are really necessary. In my semi, using synthetics, the lube change interval is 300,000 miles with a 750,000 mile warranty. I realize we are talking major diffs in a semi, but synthetic gear lubes are pretty tough and very few Libby CRD owners are really stressing the drive train in such a way that lube shearing and other such things are going to cause the lube to break down and need changing sooner. Keep in mind that gear lube is in a closed system compared to engine oil and not as contaminated by outside stuff. There really is no reason to change the gear lubes at the engine oil extended inteval.
Of course, there are those that just love to have a reason to turn a wrench. And that is fine to.
When it comes right down to a fight over whether it is covered by warranty, keeping receipts might help, but not much. If it gets to fighting level, you can show all the receipts you want, but you will still need the law firm of DoWe, Cheatem, and How to help you. Legally, it has to be shown that the lube actually failed and was the cause. That is the only way you will finally win out in the end, by showing that the lube did not fail. Receipts would just be the icing on the cake. OEM's like to blame oils and lubes for everything they don't want to pay for. Most will still claim it was you or the lube's fault even if you show receipts. Receipts, to them, does not mean you actually changed the lube, only that you bought it.
