2006 manufactured KJ (variable vane turbo...mmmhhhh) and in Austria (it is my dad's jeep). He was thinking about the TC upgrade, but I am sceptical regarding necessity.

No one is reporting problems with the euro TC so I would stick with it rather than tear into the jeep to add a suncoast. There doesn't seem like a lot of benefit there.

Would not give up my SunCoast/Transgo/ InMotion Stage 2, brought new life to my CRD.

Makes most of the Rental Cars I drive seem like crap by comparison, even the Mercedes gasser sedan I had a few weeks ago. The Mercedes 3xx drove like MicroSoft was controlling the accelerator peddle, was I sure I wanted to go when the light turned green attitude. My CRD is now more like a Lynix op system, it works.

Hmm interesting posts. I have the old suncoast new style pump, and transgo kit, sit get all sorts of rumble on any hill. By what you have here, I should just do a fluid flush and everything would be "fixed". Though I know the shop used Shell brand ATF+4. Do I have to buy the dealer fluid to "fix" this. I wrote suncoast an email about this months (nearly a year) ago and never heard anything back (not trying to dis anyone here sure I will get flamed for that).

Just sucks that I put that much work into a tranny and still have the same problem (running IM stage 2 flash since the suncoast went in). Sort of feel like the suncoast was a waist of money, but heck I will try a fluid flush (coming up on that time anyway) and see if it works.

I will report back with the results of the fluid flush....though it may be a couple of weeks.

Best of luck to you with the new and improved suncoast. I hope it give you what you want, others have had a lot of success with them, my issues I will chalk it up to bad luck.

edited for accidental profanity....sorry about that.

Groo,

You most certainly should not be "flamed" for providing "facts" from your own experience. Speaking of such, the bottom line is that only since people have been putting TCs in their "improved" KJ CRDs (with increased power, IM SII, GDE HOT, etc.) that include the stronger dampener springs as introduced with the "euro" TC, have we seen an apparent complete and final end to the dreaded KJ CRD "shudder".

While a variety of other approaches to reduce the "problem" may have yielded improvement in specific cases, the stiffer springs were the key all along. Unfortuately, it sounds like you have already tried just about everything (edit, Dr. Tranny?) except replacing the TC with one with the stronger springs. I am not aware of a single reported incident of "shudder" with either the "euro" (now standard OEM replacement) TC or a Suncoast TC since they cut into a "euro" TC and started adding similar springs to the units they have been shipping.

See: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51892&hilit=Suncoast (courtesy of Warp)

If anyone has had shudder with either of these relatively new to the game units, I would like to know.

Personally, I wish I had the money to replace my "euro" TC with a new Suncoast to see if the extra weight smooths out the vibration under 50 MPH with the GDE TCM tune. The tune is great for the 3-4 MPG improvement, but the engine is pretty rough under 1800 RPM. Maybe the Suncoast could help with this.

Now, I guess it's time to reach for the fire extinguisher.

Thanks DOC,

I have tired Tranny Dr. too to no avail. So my options are a fluid flush (250-300 to have done right rather than do in my driveway) or buy an Euro TC (300 + insall). I like the billet cover and heavy construction of the suncoast, but I am not up to dropping another 700+ into a TC then having to pay 300 to 500 for an install (I currently lack the tools and time needed to do it myself). Other option is going with the GDE ECOtune with the torque limiter enabled (450 or 750 if you buy the flash tool). Dude I must really like this jeep for tranny issues it has put me through. I think I will do a fluid flush and see how things go, hopefully my transmission won't explode while I tow our tdi beetle from GA to AZ this Dec.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Lots of good info. Best of luck with your new converter, I think I just upgraded before all the kinks were worked out (However I had already been through 4 stock TCs).

Groo.

Rev max sells a converter with a billet cover that will handle up to 450 lbs of torque and they can adjust the stall speed to better suit our diesel engine.

Groo,

Unless your "shudder" is one of the worst cases, the ECO tune should eliminate it unless you tow a heavy trailer. Then, it's almost impossible to "drive around" the problem, unless you are willing to go up most hills at over 3000 rpm.

(BTW, relatively "mild" cases make the entire Jeep shake enough to blur your vision.)

Check my dyno results (see my posts) to see how much power you will lose by not going with the HOT (or IM SII) tune.

For the record, all SunCoast problems turned out to be either a bad pump, wrong fluid, or loose broken torque converter bolts that were not torqued with the SunCoast recommended Red Loctite. These facts are disregarded by some to have a SPIN argument.
True the new SunCoast converters have larger springs, but there are lots of SunCoast converters out there doing fine with out the larger springs with very strong tunes (InMotion S2, GDE Hot Tune, Rocket Chip, and other outlaw type tuning boxes) .
As stated many times before and repeatedly disregarded by some, the front billet cover used on aftermarket converters has additional flywheel mass that smooths out the torsional vibrations. The Euro that is what the stock converter should have been since day one as recommend to Chrysler by VM uses larger dampener springs to compensate for the lower flywheel mass.
When the SunCoast CRD converter was developed, the test mule had a very very hot tune, the test mule held up and is still going. If you plan to come up with a much hotter tune than any available with out handing over extra extra money and doing tricks to your 2.8L VM like a super turbo, chances are you will not generate enough torque to trash a SunCoast. If you come up with the phantom tune, Ron Wolverton has a clutch pack that will fit into your 545RFE that will handle 800 HP and I am sure he will be happy to figure out a way to put a dual lock up clutch into a CRD converter with mega springs to handle the extra torque. He smiled and offered to sell it to me.

Oh, better plan a way to hang a bigger stronger rear axle in there to handle the extra torque.

Wouldn't a Dually Liberty CRD look cool?

Thought about it for mine, by my Honey won't let me.

Anyone have PhotoShop and can make a pic?

May Sir Isac Newton now Rest in Peace!!

Expect the transmission controler to relearn for at least 100 miles :D

CattleMan.

Just to clearify :D
Because your not in the US does not mean you have the newer so called "euro" TC. Since yours (your dad's) CRD is a 06 it came with the same TC we in the us got in our 06 crd's :banghead:
The new TC was developed for the newer 460nm VM engine with electrically operated turbo that's available in Europe and the rest of the world outside of NA. :jester:
