You mean there are people who still call it a select-trac transfer case instead of a NV242 or a NP242?
Numbers are confusing for people. Names are not. Since the 242 is the ONLY t-case given the Selec-Trac name in the Liberty...why not call it what it is? Besides, most Jeeps actually had the name stamped on the t-case shifter.
Personally I find the number less confusing.
Also, what jeeps have it printed on the shifter handle, none that I've ever owned have, which means it must be WJs, WKs, XKs, etc, none of which we are talking about on this site.
I guess its just that most of the veteran Jeeper's just call the transfer case by its model number, just like how we call our Jeeps by their model code, ie CJ, XJ, KJ, XJ, TJ, YJ, JK, KJ, KK, XK, WK, etc.
Usually someone calling it a selec-trac or a command trac indicates to me that they are fairly new to the jeep world.
