sorry lots of questions..
just wondering why the 2 mode of 4x4 high?
to me lock the front and rear..let the axles figure out the rest..

4x4Lo = low range gearing with transfer case locked (same rotation to front and rear drive shafts)
4x4Hi (part-Time) = high range gearing for going faster on level terrain, but still with the output to the front and rear axles fixed (i.e. bad for pavement, will stress the driveline when you turn the wheels)
4x4Hi (Full-Time) = Same gear ratio as above, but with the transfer case using the center differential to balance output to front and rear axles based on differences in rotational distance (just like left-right with the axle diff).

The last one is similar to AWD that you see on cars and SUVs that don't have transfer cases.

From the factory, both axles are open diffs with the rear offering a limited slip option. The t-case is not limited slip. It's either open or locked.

YES, look at their post counts and you'll know why :ROTFL:

You mean there are people who still call it a select-trac transfer case instead of a NV242 or a NP242?

Numbers are confusing for people. Names are not. Since the 242 is the ONLY t-case given the Selec-Trac name in the Liberty...why not call it what it is? Besides, most Jeeps actually had the name stamped on the t-case shifter.

Personally I find the number less confusing.

Also, what jeeps have it printed on the shifter handle, none that I've ever owned have, which means it must be WJs, WKs, XKs, etc, none of which we are talking about on this site.

I guess its just that most of the veteran Jeeper's just call the transfer case by its model number, just like how we call our Jeeps by their model code, ie CJ, XJ, KJ, XJ, TJ, YJ, JK, KJ, KK, XK, WK, etc.

Usually someone calling it a selec-trac or a command trac indicates to me that they are fairly new to the jeep world.

Or making it simple enought for those that are new and trying to understand the difference between full time and part time four wheel drive :-)r

I just tell them that part time and full time are the opposite of what they think they are, then its all clear.

The Martrix must have just reset itself, because that's how I remember it!

2006 crd with an inmotion tune.

After two TCs with no change in the bad shudder I get at 55 to 65 mph, I took my 2006 crd to the dealer. Their mechanic said there was no indication that the trans is the problem. Computer said the TC was doing functioning perfectly. The mechanic, suggests and is "quite sure" that the problem is in the transfer case. He found a lot of metal in the oil and said the shudder is from the slip clutch in the selectrac unit. They want about $1800 to replace it. Factory unit is not available in short order but rebuilds are out there no problem. The shudder is present with any selection but does seem to be worse in 2wd or full time.

Anyone else have this experience? If this is true, I wasted a lot of money jumping to the trans as the shudder problem. I've had some suggestions (like from James at InMotion) that the shudder is from the need for a fuel tank booster pump but it does not seem like a starved engine and the dealer mechanic didn't even go there.

I will appreciate any feedback you all may have. If I wanted a toy to keep dumping money into, I would buy another boat, but I like the truck and want to keep it until some part beaks that isn't available.

update on this post. The overall service manager mechanic overruled the trans guy and suggested that it is not the transfer case and that it is indeed true trans shudder. Question for those who know....

I've had two TC in this piece o.. The first one is a precision TC - supposed to be heavy duty. Second was Suncoast. Both continued the shudder. Currently have the heavy duty Precision TC. Someone on this site identified the Euro part number as 68037142AA. Dealer says that part number is now replaced with RL037142AA and says it's the same part but has been updated with a number representing now a remanufactured part. Anyone heard of this and does this sound like a Euro TC? I have wasted thousands on this Liberty and I am willing to try one more TC but wanted to know if this is the correct part number. It's all the dealer has.

Service guy said that whatever tune I did (InMotion) the torque is just too much for the trans TC. Would a GDE tune be a less costly fix do you think? Will the Chrysler part be better than a Suncoast or Precision? May just have to reflash to the original since the shudder is now so bad that I can't really drive the car very much.

The GDE tune is the answer.
