Ok so I tried searching for topics about this but either they don't exist or I can't search for **** tonight (blame it on the rum!) :SOMBRERO: but... the "cheap" steel painted wheels on my 07 are starting to shed paint. This seems to be a common affliction of these wheels as I see nearly EVERY jeep with them having flaking paint. Was it poor quality control at the plant that made them? Is there a warranty recall about I can use? Or do I just wait until the tires wear out then strip the wheels down and repaint them? Just wondering is all, as I hate the trashy look it creates. :banghead:

Properly taking care of your vehicle includes washing it and more then just the shiny painted parts. There will never be a recall for paint peeling,no matter how bad the paint job was.Recalls are for major safety issues like brakes and such.

I don't think there would be a recall for wheel paint ,but I have known of a recall for problems with the actual paint job on the vehicle. Ford had one an F-150 I still have that the paint started peeling on the cowl. After the bodyshop did a tape test and a strip of paint came off the cowl area along with the tape they repainted the whole truck.

OP, I don't know how you came by yours, but if it was from a dealer and was a recent purchase they might do something for you........??? Or check salvage yards/craigslist for a set in better condition.

Liberty02Sport: Bought the Jeep used in December of 2010 with just under 26k miles on it. wheels weren't flaking then. as for yards and CL.... this is northern NJ I'm in... little to no salvage yards and the few here to speak of charge rapist prices. CL is a total wasteland for some reason for parts these days. Think all the dismantlers are buying everything up and hoarding parts. :furious:

tommudd: yea that's pretty much the plan. probably will play with my sand and soda blasters too (new toys!!! ) to strip them down then either paint or powdercoat as suggested. I'm hoping to NOT be using these wheels in a couple months, but will still keep them around to wear shoes for towing.

unfortunately I wasn't involved with "proper care" with this thing until recently. And as for that it received a full cleaning and detailing when I got it, and I just did the diffs/trans/t-case fluids on it... according to blackstone they were factory fills as well. Oil gets done in about 2 weeks I'd guess, that one they kept up on apparently.

Krylon Non-skid surface paint is awesome for painting rims, if properly prepped it is about bulletproof. 2 winters and plenty of sandy rocky mud and no scratches or chips at all.

VoodooMann, do you have pictures of your painted rims, and do you have any pointers on the process? I like the style of the stock rims, so I'm thinking about painting them black instead of buying new rims. save money for my lift! :JEEPIN:

3 Years going strong with no touch-up yet.

I used fairly coarse sand paper to take the rims to bare metal (okay, maybe 90%) and a somewhat rough surface. I can't remember what grit I used. 100-120ish.
Then after I did that I used tack cloth to remove as must dust as I could.
Followed by a thorough cleansing with denatured alcohol and rubbed down with a rag, old t-shirts work alright.
make sure it is clean and dry, tape off your tires, and then It's Time to paint.

I used Krylon Non-Skid coating. It is designed to be walked on and used as a load surface. so I thought it would be durable, and I was right.
I sprayed on a light tack-coat first before spraying several light coats according to the directions on the can. follow them to the tee and you won't be disappointed.
I did put on quite a few coats. I think I used 3 cans. maybe more.

I let them dry for quite a while as well. I did complete the whole process in one day. I sanded while the previous rim was drying, to speed things up a bit.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I also recommend starting early in the day on a day you have all day to stay home and relax etc.

Did you sand and paint the inside/backside of the wheel?

I'd like mine to be glossy, so I might have to use a different paint and a clearcoat
