MrMopar I didn't think about the injector not being under the valve cover but that will give the VM a little extra safety feature in case of cracked injector. And this is why I will never use a pressure box. However, I believe I've hear of stock rail pressure cracking injectors and it's thought to be b/o the normal pressure spikes when one lets off the throttle suddenly. That's one reason the newer Cummins injector bodies are stainless steel. I've read of injectors stuck open or not closing completely and washing the cylinder down and "making oil". Apparently, the later model EPA'd up trucks (particularly the ford) seem to have a lot of issues with "making oil" but I'd be interested in your thoughts

I forgot to mention in my above post about a bad injector "making oil" and a slowly leaking injector can blow a lot of white smoke on old start up as the effected cylinder burns off the fuel leaked in the bowl after shut down.

Markruss: One thing to think about in up rating an engine is duty cycle. The same engine can be rated at xxhp and run WOT 24/7/365 with x service life. Double the hp and the amount of time it can run wot with the same service life will go down drastically. (IE the "Performance" marine version of the cummins truck motor turns out 485hp (i think). But is only rated to run like that 18% of the time. The Commercial duty version rates about 180-200hp but can do it all day long.) So how often do your run an automobile wot? Not much. So little hp will probably not hurt a thing, if driven sensibly. But a motor will only run so much fuel in it's life. More fuel, more hp, more fun, more stress on parts, more likely to break and shorter service interval. And the closer you get to the limits of the motor, the more likely it will fail.

Well, it's been a long time. But now, it's finally coming back together.

After looking for parts to rebuild the engine, I just couldn't afford (or justify affording) all the separate parts for this project. So the Jeep sat dead since this thread was posted.

Ma Mopar originally didn't have replacement engines when the Liberty died. So I was poking around looking for a used engine. With NO luck there. Either too many miles. Too much $$$. Or some combination of both. Used engines were costing upwards of $6000 for 90kmi! B.S.!!! :furious:

Eventually, Ma Mopar started back making reman units. So I placed the order last October. And the engine finally showed up at the end of March (just a touch over $3000). The injectors, turbine, and transmission work were done LONG ago (with one exception). As was the ECM reprogramming (thank you GDE!). The Injectors were massaged for an increase of 20% flow. And the turbine...well...you'll just have to trust me. The torque converter (custom), valve body, and input assembly were my transmission mods. I believe that this tranny will be up to the challenge. I'm guessing that it should be somewhere around the 300HP mark at the flywheel. I'll get it dyno'd some day to verify it. The only performance mod outstanding is the exhaust. That will happen soon enough. The total for this project (not including my labor and my tears), is approx. $6000. Give or take. And that's not including the front receiver, rock rails, and rook rack setup I thought would be nice to add while it was being worked on.

Anyway, it's all back together. I'm just waiting on a couple custom items, then it's ready to fire! Dear God, I hope this thing works! I don't think I want to do this again.

It was a complete Chrysler Reman unit. With Exchange. It came with everything installed except the timing belt and cover assembly. Well, that and the accessories (exhaust manifold, sensors, pumps, etc.).

It's been so long on this project, I'm shocked that I don't have more parts left over (because I'm assembling it mostly from memory). Just one plastic thingamajig (for some body part) and two small bolts. Hopefully they're not critical.
