I think I’m having an issue with my Fuel Quantity Solenoid, the solenoid that sits on the back of the CP3 injection pump and regulates the amount of fuel supplied to the injection pump. Originally I thought my issues were related to air in fuel, but after replacing my fuel filter and fuel head (2nd gen), I realized that air is not the problem. I also added a small section of clear fuel line to see if any bubbles were going to the injection pump, which there are not. The performance of the Jeep hasn’t been affected, (hard acceleration, highway speeds, passing ability), so I’m not thinking it a bad gear pump on the CP3 or fuel restriction. Here are the facts:

• Jeep dies while I’m idling (slowing down/stopped for a stop light, idling in my driveway, etc)
• It is sufficiently warmed up. An interesting note, I usually let it warm up for a few minutes before I drive away, and in the past 3 weeks it’s died 3 times in the same spot in town, all within a ¼ mile of each other, taking the same route.
• Up to this point, has always restarted after dying. Usually have to wait 10-15 minutes before it will start again.

Threads on LOST related to the Fuel Quantity Solenoid are pretty sparse, but after cruising some other diesel sites it seems like other diesels having issues similar to mine were caused by this failing solenoid.

I’ve already had it in the shop; the mechanic figured it was related to the waste vegetable oil system on the vehicle and completely disconnected it, but since I’m obviously still having the problem I think the WVO system was incorrectly faulted.

My questions are:
• Does anyone know how to find a new fuel quantity solenoid, or a part number I can search on? The KJ service manual says it can be replaced in 4 steps, but is the job possible for an average guy with a garage?
• I feel pretty hopeful that that the issue is the fuel quantity solenoid , but is there any feedback out there as to what else the issue could be?

Thanks in advance!

Drees617,

I work for a Bosch distributor. I have a list of parts for the CRD that are sold seperately. Unfortunately, the Fuel Quantity Solenoid (FQS) is not one of them.

However, you can certainly try the dealer, Mopar P/N 05159962AA.

If that does not fix it, given the amount of miles you have on your CRD, you may be looking at replacing the CP3 pump, Mopar P/N 05159975AA.

Hope this helps.

We have a few mprops and entire fuel pumps if you need one. Replacing this part is a nightmare even if it is only 3 little torx head bolts. Access is very limited and you will need some extensions and a wobble joint.

WVO is definitely a concern for fuel pump component wear.

mprop is $150
fuel pump is $700

This is about 1/2 the cost of an online parts retailer.

How many miles can one expect out of the CP3 pump in the CRD? I realize that the WVO system probably reduced it, but what is average?

Barring any issues with fuel contamination of mass quantities of air in the fuel, the CP3 pump is designed to last the life of the engine.

Wow almost a year old thread.

Why do you think you need to replace fuel qty sensor? Do you have a lift pump installed?

No, but I have the exact thing happening as the member who originally posted. Once it warms it will just stop ... And I wait about 20-30 min to start. Nothing wrong with the trans and already installed the 2nd gen fuel head . When the stall happens I prime and try to bleed but no air in filter but does have a lack of pressure .

You should consider installing a lift pump. Lot cheaper and easier than replacing either the Fuel Qty solenoid or the CP3.

IMHO the CRD should have come from the factory with a lift pump. Penny pinching on the part of Chrysler. For the most part, the wiring is there, the fuse is there, the CPU is programmed for it. They pulled it to save money.

If you filter the WVO well, I would not expect a problem due to advanced wear. The lubricity of WVO or even good biodiesel is far greater than standard diesel, and especially the newer reduced sulfur fuel.

It is thicker, and I've seen that cause problems with the cascade overflow valve in the Cummins - as it exercises the valve more and it isn't designed to cycle as much as WVO might require. Symptoms of that failure, however, would be hard starting as it becomes increasingly difficult for the CP3 to generate sufficient rail pressure to each the minimum required to fire and start.

If you don't think it is a heat-sensitive failure then I'd lean towards an accumulation of air somewhere. To diagnose, consider wiring a fuel pump in at the tank fitting for some testing. If you can get it to fail reliably, then bypassing the most common points where air is ingested (via vacuum) would seem to be the best way to isolate the problem.

Are you certain the crankshaft position sensor (required to run) isn't overheating and shutting off?

?

Mark

Would it not throw a code if it was the cam shaft position sensor ?

A failed or itermittently failing crankshaft sensor apparently does not throw a code but you can pull the sensor and check it with a meter. Apply heat and if readings start jumping around as it heats up the unit is bad. See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64199&start=80
