I think I’m having an issue with my Fuel Quantity Solenoid, the solenoid that sits on the back of the CP3 injection pump and regulates the amount of fuel supplied to the injection pump. Originally I thought my issues were related to air in fuel, but after replacing my fuel filter and fuel head (2nd gen), I realized that air is not the problem. I also added a small section of clear fuel line to see if any bubbles were going to the injection pump, which there are not. The performance of the Jeep hasn’t been affected, (hard acceleration, highway speeds, passing ability), so I’m not thinking it a bad gear pump on the CP3 or fuel restriction. Here are the facts:
• Jeep dies while I’m idling (slowing down/stopped for a stop light, idling in my driveway, etc)
• It is sufficiently warmed up. An interesting note, I usually let it warm up for a few minutes before I drive away, and in the past 3 weeks it’s died 3 times in the same spot in town, all within a ¼ mile of each other, taking the same route.
• Up to this point, has always restarted after dying. Usually have to wait 10-15 minutes before it will start again.
Threads on LOST related to the Fuel Quantity Solenoid are pretty sparse, but after cruising some other diesel sites it seems like other diesels having issues similar to mine were caused by this failing solenoid.
I’ve already had it in the shop; the mechanic figured it was related to the waste vegetable oil system on the vehicle and completely disconnected it, but since I’m obviously still having the problem I think the WVO system was incorrectly faulted.
My questions are:
• Does anyone know how to find a new fuel quantity solenoid, or a part number I can search on? The KJ service manual says it can be replaced in 4 steps, but is the job possible for an average guy with a garage?
• I feel pretty hopeful that that the issue is the fuel quantity solenoid , but is there any feedback out there as to what else the issue could be?
Thanks in advance!
