Might want to avoid PUI - Posting under the influence... :) The FrankenTurbo is the one that I am running now, working perfectly (knock wood) according to Keith who I asked a couple performance questions.

It was made from a complete center cartridge (turbine and compressor wheel - never disassembled) from the turbo that I had bought brand-new... And which came from the factory with a VNT vane problem. I took the VNT section and turbine housing from the turbo that the center bearing had failed (and the rebuild failed too) and that is how FrankenTurbo came to life.

The failed center cartridge (and the running VNT section) had about 120k miles on them, the running center cartridge has about 35k on it.

When the 120k mile center cartridge bearing failed, the compressor wheel lightly contacted the housing, doing a little bit of polishing. I didn't think it was that bad (can barely feel it) so I tried rebuilding it with the kit. I disagree with Garrett b/c if it can be built, it can be RE-built too. Sure, calibration might be a concern... But that doesn't make it impossible.
What happened however was that the turbo ran great in operation... But made a noise whenever I shut the motor off. This was not something that I was comfortable with allowing, so I pulled it out and created FrankenTurbo with the parts that worked.

Yes, rebuilding IS possible, and YES, I have it calibrated to what I am confident is exactly the same things as the factory design setup.

Cool! I didn't understand what you had done at first. Sounds like a good combination of circumstance, finding a good turbo with a bad VNT mechanism.

Who has the new turbochargers anyway? Are they huge money?

X2, ordered mine today, Sport is at 98K, close enough to make the best of the nice spring weather.

Been running around in circles all day but I wanted to post a quick status update.

The timing belt cover gaskets are gone and I'm not sure when (if) we'll see them again.

We ran out of many other other timing belt components today as well so I had to delay a few orders. Everything should ship tomorrow when the truck arrives.

Thanks everyone for the orders, I'm having a blast talking to everyone and hearing about their KJ setups.

Does that gasket need to be replaced? It is just for dust right? Does it normally break?

I didn't replace my timing cover gasket, or the other CRD that I did a timing job on. It is only there to keep dust out, which I find completely superfluous. It would be better to run without that cover in place at all, so you can inspect the belt / pulleys more frequently.

I guess it is better then going metal to metal? I think we should be OK not seeing the belt for 100K? Any ways I got me TB kit today, that was a quick turn around, and to think that parts were going to be so hard to source for this job was not so. Also a very good price compared to going with Mopar for the parts. I also got the Mezare Tstat housing and a 180 deg tstat from Summit Racing.

Any update on getting the hoses? Maybe do a hose kit and combine it with the OEM one that goes to the turbo?

Timing cover is very important! For example cats, rodents and other furry animals often like to crawl up in the engine compartment when the vehicle is unattended and warm. Not sure how much a cat head/squirrel/mouse would throw off the timing but why chance it???

The mice tend to prefer to eat the good liner, I'm not too concerned about the belt in that regard.

However, the GOOD news is that a box of them showed up today. The ETA wasn't for a few months, but I put in a big request to try to get some attention & speed things along. It worked.

So, the gaskets are back in stock.

Regarding the hoses - are you talking about intercooler hoses? I haven't gotten anywhere with those yet, sorry.

Alternators - backordered until next month. I ordered as many as was allowed, wasn't many. I hope that having some sales pressure will increase availability of these.

Head Gaskets - I'm going to spend more time on these. On one hand its a very limited motor, so I doubt there will be much Jeep availability, but since the motor is so ubiquitous in other parts of the world the good european manufacturers must make these by the truckload.

As of now we are only stocking Gates timing belts. No need to request it.

How about stocking up some CVs for the crds. There seems to be a shortage on them and maybe pretty soon this will be a hard to find item. :ALONE:
