Is it normal that my CRD smokes a lot out of the exhaust especially during exceleration, and will getting the GDE eco tune help. thanks, Bill

The eco-tune cut the visible tailpipe emissions on my 2005 to almost zero. Can't go wrong there.

Assuming filters are clean (air, fuel), the "air in the fuel system" which typically enters either at the fuel head or at the quick-release connectors at the fuel tank - are the proximate cause of smoke and rough running.

Plenty of threads that address air in the fuel system. Best solutions seem to a) replace the original fuel head/filter with a newer/improved version (e.g. Racor) and/or b) by adding a fuel pump in or near the tank.

Are you seeing any codes that would steer you elsewhere (e.g. EGR, etc)?

I was behind another CRD the other day while in Terre Haute, IN. The black smoke on acceleration was alot more than I ever recall coming from mine.

My thought is "Yes" the GDE Eco tune will help. Black smoke is classic over fuelling. It is ultimately a waste of fuel and potential power. Hope this helps.

I replaced the air filter, cleaned the sensors, ehm and just got the timing belt job but looking back on the records of the previous owner i never saw that he replaced the fuel filter it might be origional at 100,000. Thanks for the recommendation to change it can i just get a factory one??

If you don't have a Provent or other oil separator and are running Stock EGR set up, most likely your MAP sensor is gunked up with coked oil scum and not working properly. Details on how to clean are in the CRD Tech Section. You would be best off to clean the MAP before you invest in other mods including a tune. The last thing any tuner or CRD owners want to hear is that the tune did not fix the black smoke problem.
I have an Inmotion Stage II tune and I almost never have even a slightly gray smoke under hard acceleration. The engine mods in my signiture below point out what steps were taken to keep my MAP sensor clean and reduce the smoke out the back. With fuel prices high now, I want all of the energy in the fuel going to the rear wheels when I need it, not out the exhaust.

warp2diesel Yea i cleaned the MAP and MAF sensors and did an elephant hose mod and smoke does come out of theat hose that i routed to behind the rear wheels its just a lot of smoke comes out of the tailpipe. No check engine light on.

Your intake manifold could be clogged up with burned up oil goo and soot. TDIs including my Wife's that had the EGR turned on also had the problem. The best solution is an SEGR and a plate made from exhaust gasket material to block the flow. One tune (GDE) reduces the EGR flow but does not turn it off for Environmental Wacko Legislation Reasons. With some of the totally insane moves by the EPA (some based upon Junk Science), I can understand why no tuner would want to go down the path of shutting off the EGR on a Diesel engine.
If you have air bleeding into your fuel system, the bubbles will retard the timing slightly and cause more smoke as well. All the tunes advance the timing slightly to make up for crappy cetaine, but not enough to make up for air leaks. Lift pump is the solution, the stock fuel suck it out of the tank sucks to say the least.
Open up the choke point on the back of your cat to a full 2 1/2" instead of the 2 1/8". You back pressure will drop to 0 PSI and your boost will go up. More boost less smoke with any tune.

Ok so i replaced the fuel filter the previous owner replaced the filter head and plug to the new style. I also cleaned the MAF and MAP and air filter and did the Elephant Hose Mod but my CRD STILL SMOKES a lot during exceleration like a fog machine. What next any suggestion would be appriciated(external pump, GDE) thanks

check for boost leaks, loose clamp, hole rubbed in a hose.......

You are getting enough fuel so forget lift pump. I would look more towards a boost problem. Not enough air, boost hose leaking, FCV valve not working properly, vacuum hose leaking. Usually you would get a CEL and code however... Here is where a boostgauge comes in handy. You can immidiatley tell if you are not getting enough boost.

I replaced the 2 hoses with samco hoses, how much boost am I supposed to have

this is a what if reply, its possible that the vanes on turbo could be stuck wide open, thus killing boost on the bottom. Does the smoke clean up once engine gets going? if yes then you might not be boosting quickly enough to clean up the smoke. look on tdi boards, some vgt turbos the actuator/vanes stick, there are "how to's" on checking for stuck vanes/actuator and cleaning stuck vanes/ actuator. Hope this helps.

a check engine light just came on and then it went off i dont why it went off but when it was on i went under the hood and made sure the 2 samco turbo hoses were tightened and i bled the fuel there was some air in the line. I dont know if anything is related but the c e l did go off
