Holy crap, 300K! This may be the highest mileage CRD that I know of. Did he say he used 5w20? I just sent him a message. I wonder what kind of work it has had in that 300K, and if anything major has been done. Hopefully I can get a reply.

He has sold this, I was too late to see it and it was only 4 miles from me! The new owner call me last night and talked to me for about an hour. He said the previous owner kept it immaculate condition.

Its not mileage but hours on engine that counts. A low mileage car that is driven 2-3 miles to work today may have low mileage but high hours and high engine wear. Diesels excel at highway driving.

Absolutely. Most problems with diesels are from lack of maintnance and short trips. Usually diesels with long trips and run times have the least trouble. I run mine at least 35 miles each time I use it 99% of the time. I live off of a rural road that is a 55mph road. I usually idle it for several minutes before leaving, and before shutting down. I also drive conservatively until it warms up. Hopefully I will get a good service life from my rig.

I hope mine lasts that long but I will be happy to see 200,000 miles. I do take good care of my engine change the oil regularly, let the turbo cool some depending on how I was driving it, and don't push it hard when its real cold or not warmed at all.

thing is its my daily driver and only vehicle, I make trips long and short. My work commute is about like 9 miles one way and even in winter its warmed up fully by the time I'm half way. the drive to work is half in traffic half back roads where I can keep rolling. then there are shorter and longer trips too. I do try not to drive a few blocks and walk or bike when I can because I know short trips like that are bad for any vehicle. do you really think they are that bad for a diesel that one should have a cheap gasser to beat around?

5w-20?? Would seem to me to be real thin when the engine is at its max operating temperature for a long time !

I wouldn't use it. Heck, I won't even use 0w-40 in my vehicle.

Drewd,
What weight and brand of oil would you recommend. We own 2006 CRD with 79,000 miles and havent done any of the recommended mods, yet.

Here we go with the oil debates again. Look, lots of us, myself included, are using 0w40 with fine results and no failures... In fact there have been less
Reported failures with the 0w40. Lots of ALH TDI owners have used 0w40 for a long time with zero trouble. I have used it in old Volvo Diesel engines, made by VW/Audi and I have seen no measurable wear when disassembled after 150-200k. There is no harm on using it. If this fellow made it to 300k with no serious problems with 5w20, that oil will obviously work. I agree, it is not an idea choice oil, nor would I use it, but he did and it worked. I think the real key to long life on our CRD's is: highway use, longer trips, on time maintnance, warm ups and cool downs. I have said it before, but stop and go and short trips will do harm on diesels. I am curious to see what the next few years briga to the folks that do a lot of stop an go, as well as short distance trips in their CRD. I realize a lot cannot help that, however, the CRD may be a poor choice of a vehicle for those folks. I try to use my other vehicle(s) when I go on a short mile or two trip. My :2cents:

To that I would only add regular oil change intervals on the order of 6,000 miles especially if you don't do a lot of hwy driving and even if you do. IMHO oil is cheap relative to engines/rockers/lifters

I've read good results with 5/20 or 0/30. IMO, it's all about the additive packages. Haven't taken time to look up this oil, but (some) 0/30 has a great add/pack.

X10 regarding OCI. :2cents:
