Well another 45k miles and I will be ready for a second !
I am thinking about the turbo, I see a trend in failures and am considering replacing a still functioning unit. Keith @ GDE recommended to wait until failure, not sure what to do at 145,000 miles.
Check the shaft play at every oil change and you can track the wear.
I check it once in a while, it has some play but I am unsure with out feeling a good one of how much it should have! Anyone (that knows good from bad) near SE MI want to feel my turbo shaft? Ha!
slight movement fore and aft along the shaft is ok, but perpendicular to the shaft should be no perceptible movement at all. The thing about turbo wear is that it slowly gets worse, until it quickly gets worse, and at that point you are screwed if you don't do everything right very quickly.
I'd rather spend a thousand dollars for a new turbo a little too soon, than spend a grand for the turbo when it blows and 5 grand on engine repairs. IIRc there are no stated wear limits in the FSM; it might be worth asking Garrett what they recommend for service limits.
