I would be all over that-if I wasn't in Junction for another week. We can try to catch up some other time, but I am definitely interested in doing my TB, but I don't know how to get around the gear lock tool.

I would be up for a GTG but Wednesday is not good for me.

Dang it! I was doing the MAP cleaning as a first thing, and had a 4mm allen wrench all set. I removed the engine cover and the tri-part plastic wiring harness (or moved it) and had at the bolt. I think I may have stripped it? It was on there pretty tight and it was insanely hot outside, so I put it off for another day.

The angle was really weird and the body of the car was hot enough to burn my skin, so I'm waiting for another day. Maybe just a confidence thing, though...

It is possible to strip an allen head, I've done it, but in this case IIRC when things cool down try again with a shorter allen wrench so you don't get interference with the firewall. Also IIRC with the wiring out of the way you can get to the head of that bolt with vice grips if necessary. There is no special reason for this to be an allen head so if it is stripped replace with a standard hex head.

Don't drop the tiny washer tha'ts on the bolt.

Sorry but some things should not be suggested. Here is my take.

1. Fumoto valve. They get broken off road.
2. Lift Pump. Not needed with a 2nd gen fuel head and a tight fuel system. May even cause leaks.
3. Elephant hose mod. Causes more oil leaks due to bad install, smells and leaks diesel oil everywhere.
4. Mobil OW-40 oil protects the engine better with its lower viscosity. More people use it than any other. As long as the EGR is not active you will not have any rocker issues. Trust it. Like VW, BMW and MB do.

Good luck
KJJET

So I am back in Ft collins now and I will begin to do the servicing on the CRD. Does anyone in CO have the cam gear lock tool? I will not be doing this anytime soon, but it looks like the most expensive part of the job. psmitty2 how is the CRD???

The VM Cam Holding tool is expensive and one if the most misused tools. Its just used to hold the cam gears during removal and installing the mounting bolts. VW uses the same type system and do not use such a strange tool. Make your own or use a VW tool and save some money and time. I would not use one, if it was free.

Psmitty2, catcrd are you two up for a beer sometime? Here in Ft Collins there are tons of breweries and I would love to see some other CRD's and make sure there's nothing wrong with mine (spotless and runs great-which is why I'm concerned) <-Ford guy

I'm up for a beer sometime next week. I'll be back in town on Wednesday. I'm not sure where Sam is right now, as he hasn't replied to my last email. He could be in a weird part of the world for all I know. I don't think he does a lot of timing belts any more.

CatCRD what is the best way to kill the EGR without getting a CEL. There is the modification for the 2.5/2.8 '04-08 in Sir Sam's noob guide about disabling the EGR. I cant afford a eco tune right now, but it's on the list. Also what afternoons are you free next week?

Four approaches that I know of:
1. by far the best option for a host of reasons = GDE tune
2. SEGR box but last I saw a price it was ca. $300 for a built kit although Greasy Bob (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22498&start=420) might have one. This option predates the GDE tune and involves IIRC some pretty significant wiring into the harness.
3. hard plug the EGR pipe. Not too difficult but does kill any ability for the EGR to prevent turbo overspooling in certain circumstances.
4. best short term option is just unplug the MAF sensor and live with the CEL. Yes I know you are in an emissions inspection area but that doesn't matter; next time you need an inspection just plug the MAF back in and drive for a few days to clear the CEL. Don't know if CO puts a code reader on the engine and don't know if a code would be stored once the light goes out but if that's an issue I bet someone in the area has a GDE or other type code reader that can clear any ECU stored code.
