These are some reasons why we are seeing mileage in the 20s. Everybody looks at VW cars and says, "Oh...those get mileage in the 40s...why can't we?" Well...those cars don't even make 100 horsepower, can't go off-road, and can't tow anything safely either. Two completely different animals there...
With propper European hitch in Europe they are rated about 4000 lbs for towing.

As for MPG's that is a pretty fair statement, but can be better or worse depending on several things like quality of fuel, driving styles, driving conditions, and mechanical problems or issues. Also the '06 models with vehical stability control will have lower fuel mileage do to the way that program works, I think it was about 3 to 4 mpg in the Dodge SE LX series cars that didn't have the option and it was the same, so a friend told me, that was discovered on the Toyota board. I know the RT drivers LX cars reported better fuel econommy when pulling the fuze to compleately disingage the ESP system.

Yes, our front CV shafts are always engaged so we are always pushing the entire front end of the driveline right up to and in the transfer case, lots of resistance for the vehicle to have to constantly over power.

Also take a look at the math. My firend's Jetta TDI is 2/3 the weight, 2/3 wind drag, 2/3 the engine size, and it's a stick which make a big difference. He gets roughly double fuel mileage on the highway. Makes reasonable sense.

Our last tank was 397 miles in town and 62 miles highway and it took 18 gallons to fill to the neck real slowely with B2 49 cetane fuel. That is 25+ MPG's I believe, I think that I should be able to bust the 30 MPG mark easy on my trip to MI at the end of the month.

Good points. I know it is 4WD, and I wouldnt even try to compare it to a Jetta TDI. But a big van like a Sprinter getting 20? What really got me wondering was a guy i talked to recently; he was driving a Dodge Ram Cummins. We started talking about diesels, he claims to get 20, and thought the 24 my Liberty gets (on good days) wasnt so great for all the bigger it is. Don't the Euro Cherokee CRD's get milage in the 30's? Or was that just the ones with the smaller 2.5L?

Again, you have to consider that the Cummins powered Dodge trucks have 100% more power, but only 25% more weight. So yes, they will get 20 miles per gallon on the HIGHWAY if driven properly. People seem to expect more from the Jeep...but really it's doing VERY well for what it is.

A big, empty, 2WD sprinter van. Curb weight is 5,085 lbs. But payload capacity is an additional 3000lbs. Also, it's an inline-5 diesel made by MB and is probably more efficient with that extra piston.

Keep your stock tire size and you'll see better than 25mpg, eventually.

It is also more aerodynamic that the Liberty... Sad but true, the Liberty is heavy and not aerodynamic at all.
