Hello all on or near I-95!

I'm back on the East Coast again, and I have another timing belt trip to plan out - The last week in May will find me in NYC, so this will be a quick trip, but I'm happy to stop by and work on your CRD if you would like. I already have one signed up in Baltimore for the weekend of the 24th (Probably will work on his on Sunday the 25th) so there are some times open.

More people signing on means less travel costs for everyone, and saving money!

I have personally worked on over 30 different CRDs, all of which are running smoother than ever before (so says each owner after the timing job) and I am confident in saying that there is not a mechanic in the country that has worked on more CRDs than I have.

I do the timing belt procedure in just about 3 hours start-to-finish, the front end DOES NOT need to be removed for my process, and I even capture all the coolant and you can reuse it or replace it - None is wasted or spilled. No special tools or locations are needed, if all you have is a parking place, that is ok.

Even considering the skill level I bring to the job, the price I ask is still a bargain. $900 for the labor for the full job, plus a share of the total travel expenses. Parts are sold in a complete $400 kit from IDparts.com (I don't get anything from them for the referral) and comes with everything needed for the job.

Dealers charge anywhere from $1800-$2500 for this service with parts... And that is IF they have ever seen a CRD before! Don't let them experiment or learn on your vehicle!

Time is short for signing onto this trip, so don't wait. Send a PM to me, and get on the list!

Any chance you'll be making a trip through the Northwest? I'm at 75,000 on my '06, and no doubt am in need of a change. I'm definitely willing to make a trip of several hours from here in south-central Montana to have the TB done by someone who knows their stuff.

Hey Chris,

Sorry - I did see your PM, but replying slipped my mind. I apologize for that, this food poisoning is actually a nasty stomach bug (variant of Norovirus that has been running around) and it has managed to get my entire family on this trip - Nobody has been having any fun this week.

I'll try to remember to give you a call tomorrow and we can talk. If I can't see you this week, don't worry - I will be coming right back up after the 5th for at least 2 other CRDs so I will have a chance to check yours out too.

Fair warning - Fixing or checking the timing requires just as much work as actually pulling the belt, especially if the fuel pump wasn't properly timed during the timing job.

Not timing the fuel pump is the prime reason I can point to for unexplained vibrations. Think of it this way: Your fuel rail gets a slug of fuel shoved into it at the precise instant that a drain opens on the other end (an injector) and the pressure in the rail stays static. When the injector wants fuel, it comes out at the right pressure, so it sprays nicely and you get smooth combustion.

When the fuel pump isn't timed precisely, the pump shoves a slug of fuel into the rail when NONE of the injectors are open... The pressure spikes. The injector opens when the pump isn't pushing (so the pressure relaxes) and now the pressure DROPS because there isn't a matching fill behind the injector. Fuel spray is initially good, but then weakens. Combustion is uneven and unpredictable. Power is down.

The computer doesn't like rail pressure spikes, so it tries to adjust, which doesn't help matters for smooth running either.

Make sense? Does this sound like your CRD?

Exactly how does a 3 piston fuel pump get timed to deliver fuel at the precice moment each injector fires on a 4cyl engine?

Easy: the pulley is sized to spin at an exact ratio of the crankshaft speed. The crankshaft pulley is 1/2 the size of the camshaft pulleys, so the camshafts rotate at 1/2 engine speed. The fuel pump rotates at 2/3 of that camshaft speed, and the starting point with the cam pins both in, and the fuel pump lined up, happens on every 6th rotation. Every 12th rotation, each cylinder should have had 4 full combustion cycles, and a 3-lobed pump can easily line up with that when the pulleys are properly sized.

Yes, the particular pump lobe might not be matching with a specific cylinder on each pressure event, but it is matching with A cylinder, that is what is important.

Pump timing is critical.

Geordi timed my jeep, replaced the rockers, deleted the egr, and replaced my glow plugs. She is purring like a kitten now! I highly recomend his service and he is extremely personable!!!
