OK, just installed the EHM now to check to see if I did it correctly. I ran 3' of 3/4" heater hose from the CCV valve on the top of the engine. Tie wrapped the end to the brake lines by the oil filter....stuck about 4" of 1/2" pvc pipe into the lower end to give it rigidity and extend it just below the oil filter so any oil wouldn't drip on anything. I then fabricated a plug from 1/2" pvc pipe with a pipe cap on the end and shoved it into the other hose.

Seems to work and no CEL. But there sure is a lot of white smoke comming from the EH.....is this a nomal thing that my engine was breathing? Sure seems like crappy stuff to put into an intake. Can I fab some kind of a filer into the end to catch any drips?

Does this installation fall in line with what others have done? Or did I miss anything?

Tks for the help.

See the Coca-Cola post by Old Navy (scroll about halfway down). Your set-up sounds good to me but I don't have any first-hand experience on this...might want to read all of the above thread. Others who know better should chime in.

Thanks for the info....of course I didn't read the link before I did my mod and the EH runs down behind the air box instead of over the engine. I wonder why they took the long way around, over the engine to the frount instead of just down the back. Makes me think mine is not quite optimal but I didn't want any high points on the hose. I'm heading out for another 1,000 mile trip to S.D. and back so I'll get and idea real quick if anything is amiss. Wonder if this will help mileage.

Did I read in the link that the CCV also acts like a waste gate for the turbo?

I also ran it down by the air box down just a tad below the skid plate. I also have seen the white smoke at idle and in the last days have seen oil coming out. Can't belive that crap going into the intake system.

If that fog/oil dripping becomes annoying, there is a good size hole in the top side of the frame channel close to this location. You could tuck the hose into the hole and let it vent/oil into the frame. I have seen how messy open venting can be over time so I opted for the Provent.

A "high point" in the hose is actually a good thing. It encourages the liquid to drain back to the engine instead of the driveway. I would stay away from the air filter with the hose outlet. The vapor out of the hose will not help the air filter one bit.

If you did someone didn't know what they were talking about, we have a variable van turbo with no waste gate required.

What he said!!!

I never saw any smoke, vapor or anything else coming out the hose on ours.

There will be some vapors (kinda smell sweet like antifreeze almost) coming from the EHM. Some have rigged up a cotch can (using a coke bottle) to recover any oil residue. You could also use an Oil Bottle as a catch can...make sure it is not air tight.

Oldnavy or anyone, i just bought a used 2005 CRD with 26k miles on it. I'm taking it to the dealer next week to have the ball joints an any other recall item done. My question is, what is the magic words to say to the tech to get my CVC/intercooler/intake cleaned? I really want the system cleaned and once the jeep is back from the dealer I'd like to do an elephant mod until the CCV filter mod is available to buy.

Thanks for the help!
Chris

I am not sure what to tell you here, I am some what of a BS'er. But also I have worked in the service depts and sales dept's of dealers and can talk on the same level of the techs. A lot of it is how you come across to the tech's, pastry's are always an ice braker. Just make sure you pass them out or set them out in service area, not in some waiting roon or service office where sales and management get the treats and not the techs.

Don't worry about it. If you want to do the EHM, just do it now. Your jeep is still running just fine so just stop any further oiling (if any) now. I'm still not convinced that I'm going to do this mod. I'm at one year of ownership as of this week and 14,700 miles.

ULSD will reduce the soot problems and leave very, very minimal oil (if any after engine break in) coming in through the CCV.

That would be nice if the ULSD had anything to do with the operation of the CCV, but it does not. The CCV is designed to vent unburned blowby from the engine as it comes past the rings (all diesels have blow-by, even new ones) as it vents the crankcase gases that come through oil passages into the valve cover and out to the intake to be burned. There will always be oil in the mix and it needs to be filtered out from the fumes going to the intake to prevent the oil from being burned in the cylinders, fouling the pistons, valves and injectors. Look it up if you don't believe us.

I hate to be the one to give you the news; you are on your own with the oily intake. DC will not warranty it, will claim it's "normal", and it's unlikely that your dealership will want to do anything like this to a properly working CRD that's still under warranty (even if you pay them). It can't hurt to ask and see what the response will be.

It's not difficult to remove all the hoses and clean them and into the castings as far as you can reach. A little biodiesel is an excellent solvent to cut through the oil residue and ether (starting fluid) works well as a rinse without damaging the hoses. At 26K, your intercooler should still be OK.

They just replaced my hoses and CAC under warranty couple of weeks ago, so the statement that D/C will not warranty is BS. I know that for sure they will replace the CAC at least one time, need copy of ticket???

Anyone with a provent, and elephant hose mod please let me know which one is more effective, does the provent really seperate the blowby gasses or should I just elephant hose mod it.

There is a little difference between warranty on an item proven to be causing a problem and trying to get a dealership to do preventative maintenance under warranty. I have a feeling that 9 times out of 10, if you show that the CAC hose has an oily film they are going to say that it is normal for a diesel. Unless the hose is "bleeding" thru ect...you will probably get brushed off.

Goog point DW, mine were bleading through and the protectve rubber sleave had already desolved.

Looking back this morning my answer seem a bit gruff, I guess I am not getting out enough lately. Need to go bang a few down range, or more to the truth I need a break from wife, daughter and grandson. Sorry about that RFCRD.

Blow by gasses are partially unburned, not fully unburned - hence, soot and soot loaded oil will get by - but we are talking tiny amounts right now.

Initially durring break-in and then again as the engine gets many, many miles on it and the rings are not so tight sealing and the quantity of blow-by gasses will dramatically increase. All I'm saying is I'm not convinced the EHM is needed at this time.

Up here in the cold zone the discharge of the tube will probably freeze up so I'm not rushing to this kind of solution. How far down did you hang your catch bottle?

I can't remember, but did we ever give these units a chance or were they too big:

They are huge and do not fit well. The simuliar ProVent was reported to freeze up in the north country from reports of a couple of VW owners in central Canada.

Regular oil spray vapors in the valve covers are a huge problem also and seem to be the bigger problem in the VW's and that may also be true here.

Since I live in a moderate climate I doubt that I will have any winter problem of liquid freezing in the catch bottle. The bottle which just touches the top of the frame rail, and should stay clear of any winter slush.

This oil in the intake get WORSE as the engine breaks in, I speak with 6 years experience of working with VW's with this same system. I designed and sold on the VW TDI forum a sucessful CCV filter and the test bed vehicles were about 15 cars ranging from new to 60,000 mile range. Cars that had more blowby were the ones with more miles on the engines and a couple that were using non synthetic oil, including one guy that was using a 15w-40 diesel oil.
