Well, I had the scariest moment to date in my Jeep today. I had gotten a little aggravated in an argument and was driving angry (mistake #1). So anyway, was speeding slightly and came up on a light that was turning red. Misjudged the distance, got on the brakes and just kept going. That is a bad feeling having the pedal to the floor and not really slowing down. The BFGs left a heck of a skidmark before I eventually stopped at the edge of the crosswalk. So anyway, I had never needed ABS before, but realized today why that would be nice.

ABS can actually make things worse. it can actually make you stop further than it would without it. Its usually best to know where you get the highest braking. Right on the edge of locking the tires up is best, after they lock up then you loose traction. Abs is good to control the jeep if you are in a turn or something and hit the brakes. Or lets say an old lady walked out infront of you when you were trying to stop. Turning the wheel would of done nothing and she would of died. If you had abs you could of turned and missed her. But yea, Im sure you would of been better off with it.

i dont know. if he hadn't had ABS and he would have locked up all four wheels then if he turns he would go sideways and would either stop faster or roll over!!! either way he would have come to a stop!!

Yeah it started to slide. It was my first experience of that and it scared the crap out of me. It actually did start to go a little sideways, but not too bad. Fortunately, the intersection was clear.

hehe, i actually had a really scary experience in my non-ABS 95 cherokee country. I was in a hurry to school one day, 2 lanes on each side, 1 lane in middle. Anyways, the left lane comes to a complete stop with me going about 50, so I switch lanes quickly, to see the other lane come to a quick stop. I put on the brakes. I hear no indications, but immediately feel some lateral movement. I just barely missed the truck, but HOW i missed it is the funny part. It seriously came from playing GT4 and screwing around with my friend's 645ci BMW. I initally steered away the truck, and at the last second, swerved toward it, causing the back end to swing hard out towards the grass to the right. and just barely missed it. Had I not, I would clipped the front back end on the truck. The funniest part of the whole thing is that I came to a stop in the grass next to the truck, and just stared straight ahead like nothing had happened.

GT probably teaches a lot of people some bad driving habits, but they physics are so good that you can actually learn a lot. Especially how a vehicle will react in a skid or other panic situation. When you are playing those games those reactions become automatic and having skills like that can actually tranfer over to real world situations.

Ill never forget when I spun out but didnt make it all the way around. I gave it some more gas and spun it back around and kept going like everything was peachy. Got that from playing nascar racing 2003. :)

My "Driver; You Are the Wheel Man" skillz saved me once.....from a passing Explorer that must have still had the old skool recalled Firestones on it. Tire shredded as he was passing me in the left lane. I heard the noise slowed a bit, he came fishtailing over across my lane into the guard rail and bounced off. The dude almost hit me TWICE and the brown snake almost escaped if you know what I mean.....

Yeah, me too. My Grand Tourismo skillz kept me from panicking when I fishtailed on sandy wash. In my head I was like "oh cr@p oh cr@p don't roll" but outside, to my wife, I was cool. Wife said she was a little freaked out but "knew you could handle it". Well that made me feel good, but if only she knew what was going on in my head ... :-)r

Don't even ask what I'm like after a really fun game of UT2k4 .. haha

ABS is not supposed to make you stop any faster/shorter....really common misconception. It's supposed to make a skid somewhat controllable. Everytime the brakes release, the wheel free rolling, you should be able to steer. It's generally not much, but a huge difference than being on ice skates.

I guess I just repeat what JeepJeepster, but what the heck.

I think ABS really is nice in a location where you have a lot of ice/snow it seems to help out a lot when trying to get stopped. I have driven alot around here with both non abs and abs vehicles (first abs vehicle i learned to drive in was momy's dodge caravan!) you can really tell the difference when your sliding uncontrolably in snow and when the abs kicks in you slow down a lot faster.

Hey dirtykj whats a "sandy wash"?

My MAD GTA Skillz came in use one night driving on I-80 in PA, in a rain storm and was driving 70mph, probably a bit fast for how much it was raining and how bad visibility was. Anyway, I was driving my little Kia and all of a sudden (from what I could see out of no where too  ) this rear end of a tractor trailer is in my face. I break, and throw the wheel around and somehow ended in the passing lane. I was probably milliseconds from rear ending this trailer. It happened so fast, I barely remember it happening, and definitely didn't have time to think about, and if I would have, I probably would have been toast.
