im gonna get a rear locker before the moab trip this year.
anyone have any preference or experience with one or the other?

it seems the no slip is a bit higher in price, but from the descriptions you cant really tell a difference.

i do want one that you can put in with minimal effort as well as one that is street friendly...

Neither are really street friendly, they take some getting use to, but the no slip is the better of the 2. I had the no slip installed for a week in my ranger, then took it out and sold it. I then got the detroit truetrac and couldn't be happier. The no slip won't let you power in and out of turns without barking and jerking the tires. Hit a slick spot and the rear will come around in a heart beat, it's some what noisey. The only thing with my truetrac is if I get a wheel jacked up, but I apply alittle brake presure and both wheels then pull together like a regular locker. If you do 90% of your driving on the street, I would get a truetrac, or save up for a selectable locker. Sure the no slip can be done by you in your driveway, but it can be a pain in everyday driving. Alot of guys use them and put up with side effects, but I'm not one of them, I'm a sissey ha ha. I'm gonna put a TT in my kj as well, it's perfect for what I do. At anyrate, the no slip is supost to be the better of the two for street driving as it's less noisey. I only had it for a week, but it does grab verywell, even when you don't want it to ha ha.

Every once in a while my No-Slip will make the loudest bang imaginable. It freaks people out. It's rare however. Otherwise I really like it. The performance off-road is perfect.

Go with the detroit products, if you search you will find alot of people having thier No-slip basically explode. If you want a locker get a real one........Detroit, if you are worried about noise you shouldn't be going offroad with your jeep anyway!

Jason, you want the no-slip. Trust me. It is more than worth the extra 100 dollars or so. I had a lock-rite in my CJ. The no-slip in the KJ was a HUGE improvement over the lock-rite on the street.

As far as road manners it's debatable. It's all personal opinion. I don't mind mine one bit. My fiance drives my Jeep all the problem and never has a problem with it. If you can handle the MT/Rs and lift then the no-slip probably won't bother you much. You probably won't even hear it or feel it over the MT/Rs. I know once I throw my MT/Rs on I can't hear it at all and the MT/Rs ride stiff anyway so a little bump from the increased backlash is hardly noticeable. I think you've ridden in my Jeep once if you can remember.

They are not that hard to install. About 2 hours should cover it if you have done it a few time before. If you where still on OH i would throw it in for you. I just did one today on a new KJers jeep and he loves it. I have pictures of the install if you want to see.

Its a good inexpensive locker. It won't break on you unless you really try and then you are more than likely going to break something else. You can break anything if you try hard enough and just because someone broke their's doesnt mean much. A lot of people on this board run them and only one or two have broke. I'd be more worried about my front differential than power-trax no-slip breaking, and if you have a light right foot you don't need to worry about either much. I've actually seen the spline on the rear axle shaft on a KJ 8.25" break off before the locker broke, so it is more than strong enough for the KJ.

Rocky Road Offroad I think has them the cheapest. I got mine off e-bay, but it was only a few dollars less than RRO. I suggest RRO.

The person I just installed one for today got their's from RRO since it was the cheapest. He didn't have any problems. They drop shipped it from Richmond Gear anyways.

I'm pretty sure you have the open diff on your KJ, but you might want to double check before ordering. You can call a Jeep dealer and give them your VIN and they should be able to tell you.

I've got over 14,000 miles on my no-slip and it still doesn't make any of the noises that people describe having with theirs. Could running 75W140 gear oil be the reason mine doesn't make noises? I've felt it slip and jerk on a few occasions, and the rear tires will chirp if I accelerate a little hard around a corner, but no noises to speak of.

Maybe mine is possibly defective?

Go Detroit TT front and rear...Powertrax rear is also good choice...can add a Detroit TT up front later

I personally am getting tired of my powertrax. It did just fine for the first couple thousand miles, but its been making alot more noise lately. I thought it was the cold winter(single digits) but its still doing it and its been in the 60's.

I was also having some troubles getting it to lock up in the snow. I could actually hear the teeth grinding when they wouldnt catch. If I popped it into N then back in D it would usually lock back up. Its happened a few times offroad also. :?
