I timmed the plastic flare about 3/4" and bent up the small metal lip. It seems to have helped but one side still hits when turning into a parking lot with a steep angle. There doesn't seem to be any damage, just an ugly noise and some rubber from the flare scuffs the tread of the tire.

Does anyone else experience this?

When you say "rear" I'm thinking you mean rear wheel arch. I've got 265's on 16X8's with 4.5" BS, I cut about 15 to 20mm of the inside of the top of the flare & bent the metal back up onto it's self. It now only rubs on the front & back of the wheel arch but only at full stuff. No rub at the top of the rear wheel arch. But if you mean the rear of the FRONT wheel arch, then perhaps you need to trim some more. I've trimmed a lot & now have no rubbing issues, but you would need to bend the pinch weld (perhaps that's what you mean when you said "the small metal lip"). Can you post a pick of where it's rubbing?

I too am confused
I have 245/75's on OE wheels and only have rub at very full stuff in the rear ,bump stop extensions will stop it
if it is the front then pinch weld or heat gun depending on the rub

Thanks for the responses.

It is the top middle of the flares on the back tires. I trimmed quite a bit of the plastic (wherever I could see scuff marks from the tires)and banged back the metal with a rubber mallet and it helped. I was particularly concerned about a metal tab the stuck out just in front of the rear door opening. Some paint chipped off, so I hit it with Rustoleum.

I also realized the tire shop had put 40psi in the tires, and when i went down to 32 it helped even more.

I am going to stack 2 extra spring isolators on each side to make sure it doesn't rub when loaded. That should give me 1" of lift, correct?

The front tires only rub a tiny bit and probably don't need trimming.

I'm surpised they rub. Other people don't seem to have this problem. Maybe mine sits a little low in back or 2005 flares are a little different.

The new tires are amazing. The appearance and on road performance far exceed my expectations. I'm sure off road it will be great too as long as I can clear the flares!

I have had no rubbing with my 245/70s. I would be careful with the psi in your tires, too low will overheat your sidewalls at high speed and then you are in trouble. I have heard that 10% below max is the lowest you should go with regular city/highway driving. Just my $.02.

Wisconsin, LA, MAssachusetts, and Australia. That's pretty cool!

The problem is not the 245/70r16 tires, its the 16x8 rims with 5" of backspacing. They push the tires far enough out so that the rears just kiss the fender flares in the top middle when bouncing up over a bump.

I ran my 30x9.50 tires on my xj, basically the same size as 245/70r16, at 32 psi for years so I should be ok.

The KJ weighs about 500lbs. more than the XJ. I'd recommend running them at 33 or you'll probably wind up wearing them out sooner than you'd think. And the problem with the rubbing your getting is the soft stock springs and shocks. Upgrade to OME springs (all 4), OME struts and any good shocks. Should solve most of the rubbing issues. I realize that may not be an option right away though. As mentioned above, the cheapest option right now is extended bumpstops to keep it from stuffing that far. And once you do lift it, you'll gain a lot more travel than you'll lose to the bumpstops.

I've got 4.5" back space (so 12mm more offset, than the 5") + my tyres are 20mm wider (265's). I think, but it's only a guess. That your rims may be 4.5" back space, the only reason I say this is the Cragar Soft 8's I ordered from the states said 5" back space on the net but infact arn't. They are 4.5" BS, the only saving grace that Summit Racing has is on there spec page (on the net) it also say's +12mm offset & 5" BS for the same rim  . Bit of a contradiction if you ask me but that's my problem now. So that could be the reason that your's rub more than some of our fellow KJer's. Oh, mine is also an 05 Sport.

When I ordered my Cragars only 4 made it out, the fith went on a round trip I think. That was back in late Aug, I'm told it will arrive this week (I hope). I'll measure my back space with a ruler when I get it to be sure I'm not wrong

I agree with Dje Ryu, you'd be better running those rims & tyre's with a lift (probably more so the rims).

That's a sweet ride. I really like the Cooper muds.

I am going to slowly add more air to figure out what the max is wothout rubbing.

I am also going to add bumpstops just to be safe

IMO your problem is the wheels.
I have 245/75/16 and no problems rubbing on the rear @ full stuff on the factory renny wheels.
I do however have daystar extended bumpstops.

another sweet ride!

clearly its the wheels. the backspacing must be different than what cragar says.

bump stops are next, then if i have to a lift.

right now with the trimming and 32 psi its ok.

Hi-- Can someone explain to me how to install bump stops? Do I need to remove the coils?

245/75r16 will fit on a stock rim with no rub?

The rear bumpstops go on the bottom, inside the spring.
Some people have just used a modified hockey puck and some sikaflex (polyurethane) to stick it on

I'm using the 1.25" daystars and I believe they need drilling and then screw in.
