i have the same problem with the a jack. I went out and bought a brand new 3 ton jack and stands just to do the lift. The one i had were old. So got the lift on and what happens the darn jack doenst reach!! so after throwing a few 2x6 boards under it i ws just about to get it off the ground enought to get the wheels back on. So now i have to go out and get a high lift just so i can change a darn tire. Oh and now that you mention it ive got a stupid story. Early on in my wrenching days; i think when i was 14 or 15; i was out working on my t-bird. I had the front end up on two jacks while working on it. Yeah i know stupid. At the time though i had no idea and nobody had ever said anything. So working away pulling various parts off the motor and errrrrrrrr....... errrrrrrr..... the jacks started groaning and boom the car fell off the jacks on the tranny. awsome. learned my lesson that day.
OUCH!!!! Obviously you were not under it. Takes a brave man to admit that story. A similar story, Kind of:
When I was 17 i worked at a local Chevron station. On the weekends (open 24/7) I was kind of the assistant manager. The manager was this boob who thought he knew everything. One sunday this old guy comes rolling in in some 1972 fleetwood. exhaust had come un connected just beind the muffler. clamp came loose. tail pipe was dragging AGAINTS the grain, meaning it was dragging forward.
This BOOB jumps in the car says no problem "I can fix it" and throws it in drive and proceeds to pull it up on the front end rack at about 10 mph.
NOTE: I said FRONT END RACK. the cross members caught the tail pipe and crash, sent it flying through the passenger side rear floor. The Boob climbed out and looked at the damage and the face of the guy who owns the fleetwood and throws me the keys and says I'll be in the office, fix it john.
ALL the tools are locked up except a pair of channel locks, vise grips, BFH, bailing wire, duct tape and a hack saw.
I cut what was left of his tail pipe off re-attaced what was salvagable and pointed it out of the side, like something off a dirt track and put the rest in the trunk. lowered the car, backed it out, handed the keys to the owner handed him the business card to the owner of the station and asked if for forgiveness and told him i did the best I could but my boss will need to see this on monday. He tipped me 50.00 and said I want that BOOB's name. I gladly told him and he said I think you will be the manager next weekend. I was.
Exhausts off a fleetwood make the loudest noise when ripping through floor panels.
