My kj is getting poor mileage of late ,ive cleaned the maf sensor ,my question is can the egr valve be cleaned ? and are there benefits to this or is it better to replace with new?Does it have to be removed completley or can it be done in place. Are there any gaskets that need to be renewed after removal? Ansd last but not least were the bladdy hell is it positioned?

The MAP is on the intake at the left rear under the wiring loam and should be cleaned. I wouldn't clean the EGR unless you getting a code but it can be removed and if needed cleaned. It is on the left side of the engine above the starter. Here is a link how to take apart.

Darby walters and black liberty crd i have cleaned the sensor you mentioned about a thousand miles ago. Are there any other hoses or sensors that could be causing my degraded mpg?.

Heavy defroster work because of winter (I guess you guys in Britain have the same poopy winter weather as we danes do), more coolant to warm up before the viscous additional coolant heater backs off is a few reasons it might be worse just because it is winter.

Now I would check my filters - air filter and fuel filter. Obviously only if they haven't been changed within the last 20,000 miles. Boost hoses too. Rear brakes (where the hand brake is sitting). Check for dirt inside the brakes to see if the handbrake is dragging.

Umm, I think those EGR and soot problems can also cause some increase in consumption. I would probably do the easy things first.

FYI my consumption at an average 80kph/50mph work-home commute is about 10.6l/100km at the EVIC. More likely 11l/100km in reality doing hand calcs.

How many miles (excuse me, km's) on the fuel filter and air filter since they were last changed?

From what I've seen, the first question a good diesel mechanic will ask when someone complains of recent poor fuel mileage - "When's the last time you changed the fuel filter?".

Any recent mods, work, or change in driving habits that might play into it?

Edit: as pointed out above, it's also winter - viscous heater will be kicking in to supply cabin heat until the engine's warmed up, and A/C compressor will be kicking in for floor heat and defrost modes.

i'm getting 12-14mph on 3 mile commute to work. I filled tank last night and evic said 244 miles to empty. I changed the air filter about 1500 miles ago and have checked it ,it's a bit dirty but not bad enough to change it.Would changing the fuel filter make that much difference i think it was done about 4000 miles ago. I used to get 18ish mpg round town .

winter diesel will yield poor MPG, not sure if that is a factor over the pond, but a lot of us here have problems with the winter blend.

in a 3 mile commute - the engine will barely get warm and it's running the viscus heater the entire time
maybe you could try a grill block to help it heat up faster.

Do you drive for longer distances than the 3 mile commute? I assume you do but I have to ask.

Although the filter only has 1500 miles on it, how long ago was it changed? I'm wondering if it's gotten wet/clogged.

Do you have a brake caliper dragging?

I second that. Watching the EVIC while the engine is cold is like drinking acid. It just burns!! I rarely do better than 12l/100km when the engine is cold compared to 8l/100km when the engine is warmed up on my work commute. This is at granny speeds and with acceleration measured on a calendar.

Air filter was done in june about 1500 miles ago and it's got some dirt in it but not much and its definatley not wet. Gonna check hoses and clean map sensor again today. Would one of the grille blockers that go on with the clip on studs help matters? Also i'm going to put jeep on my mates ramps and check bearings and possibilty of brake drag but i'm pretty certain the brakes are fine as i changed front pads not long ago and stripped and cleaned off the backs whilst i was at it.

I will be cleaning that MAP sensor soon, if you say you get better mileage!

On a short journey today noticed car pulling to one side, you guessed it sticking caliper rubber seal split letting in moisture, cant get one from auto store so phoned stealership and ordered seal kit boot and piston .But was told later by a friend they can be a real pain to fit so cancelled order and ordered a new caliper.£147.00 ,it will arrive at stealership in two days . I just hope it hasnt warped the disc with the heat build up. Have eased up the caliper for now until i can fit the new one either saturday morning or monday. So it could have been the dragging brake that was upsetting mpg although the car wasnt pulling too one side until today.
