I'm loving that gladiator! Removable doors, fold down windshield, and that sliding rear bulkhead thingy... with a diesel. That is awesome.

The 08 Renegade is fugly, not ugly, FUGLY. This from the (same?) company that killed the Gladiator concept, and wouldn't even consider the Rescue concept. The company that has said nothing about the Wrangler JT. Won't put a diesel or V8 Hemi in the Wrangler. Screwed the pooch with the Compass, Patriot, and Commander. Jeep's only hope now is that there might be somebody at the top who know what JEEP really means and will apply it.

Hey easy now. We get the diesel option for Wranglers in Europe ;)

Just move over here, don't abide to those insane diesel laws you are being oppressed by in the US!!

Well the "boxy" look has not kept sales figures for the new Liberty (or Commander for that matter) on pace with the 2002-2007 KJs. The KJ was the best selling SUV in its class...now the KK has fallen to 4th(92,105) behind the Honda CRV(219,160), Toyota Rav4(172,752) and Ford Escape(165,596). If you add the Dodge Nitro(74,825) to the Liberty Sales numbers you squeal into 3rd just ahead of the Ford Escape.

***based on sales numbers in 2007***

I dont think the Liberty even competes in that category anymore. With a higher emphasis on MPG now, all of those vehicles blow away the Liberty. The compass and patriot are competition to CRV, Escape, Rav4 now. The Liberty (KK) has become a bit of an oddity because it has the size of those vehicles but the utility (and MPG) of larger SUVs.

The Patriot with a Manual stacks up pretty favorabaly with the top sellers (2WD and 4WD). I do agree that the Liberty KK is really in a different class with the Solid Rear Axle/2 speed Transfercase. The only 'true" offroad vehicle in the bunch is the Liberty...better to compare with Nissan XTerra and like SUVs

You are right, but the KJ was only a bit better MPG wise than the KK and it was kicking a** in the sales charts and beating all above.

De-cuting the Liberty and making it bigger was not a smart move, if it sells like hotcakes you don't change the recipe.

The KK sales are slumping now and they are going to cut the third shift at the Toledo plant.

KJ dec 2006 11.979 units
KK dec 2007 9.941 units that's -17%

KJ nov 2006 7.360 units
KK nov 2007 6.813 units that's -7%

KJ oct 2006 11.004 units
KK oct 2007 6.486 units that's -41%

KJ sep 2006 12.367 units
KK sep 2007 6.830 units that's -43%

And remember in the fist years the KJ was selling over 15.000 units every month and 2006 (see above) was the slowest year for the KJ and still it was doing much bettter than the new model.

Jeep still thinks the skyslider roof is going to safe 2008 KK sales  , but workers at the factory admit the skyslider roof has problems and is leaking.

Don't forget that there were some huge fleet sales deals of the KJ's in those years which "helped" the numbers just a smidge... :D

I know of a quite a few sales reps I deal with that had a company provided KJ or had the KJ as an option.

The whole point was that the KJ was the TOP SELLING SUV in its class regardless of mpg ratings. JEEP, whether they changed the shape or not, needed to pay more attention to MPG. Even tho the KK gets about 1MPG better than the Gas KJs with the new standards...they fell way behind the competition by not putting more emphasis on MPG. On the other hand they have the Patriot and "rarely" do I see any advertisment for that model. The Compass had some ads in the beginning but it gets no better MPG than the Patriot.

They should have found ways to make the new Liberty "lighter" not "bigger" and increase City MPG...then work on increasing highway mpg. Honestly, if my CRD didn't get more than 20+mpg city and at least 28+ highway, I would not be happy with it. Otherwise, put a bigger/stronger engine in the KK that gets the same MPG as the 3.7L. The 4.0L in the Nitro gets 16/21 (2WD) and 15/20 (4WD)...that is so close to the KK now...the extra power would have been nice.

Interesting post Darby on the mileage stuff. When I bought my CRD I slected it over the Escape/Tribute hybrid because the road mileage was about the same but the towing capacity of the hybrid was 500lbs versus 5000lbs plus on the CRD. I needed a tractor not a peddle car thanks.

I'm probably going to take my son to the Philly Auto Show this year. Haven't decided which day yet.

And the above statements are exactly why the fleet sales and normal sales are down on the KJ/KK..the MPG sucks...unless you are looking for comfort on road with decent offroad abilities or a decent small tow rig (CRD) than you are not going to get a KJ/KK. Most of the saleguys that had 03 and 04 KJs have now turned them back in and gotten the Pacificas or minivans because of the gas milage...and the fold flat seats

Chrysler needs to realize this real soon because there will be no Gov't bailout with Lee Iacocca this time...the end will be the end.

you know....I've had one of these cars for years. Sure the paint is a bit bad, needs a new coat, but it still keeps on going. Here it is doing some rock climbing. Don't underestimate that roll bar....its pretty tough as you can see. ;)

It looks happy.

About ten years ago I test drove an electric Ford Ranger for my job. The hardest thing to get used to was how there was no sense of speed due to the lack of engine noise and no transmittion shift. I constantly had to watch the speedometer at first. I would look down and be doing 60mph on city streets. It would move, that's for sure.
