I have a buddy who I used to wheel with in my KJ who drove a YJ. EVERY TIME, and this is fact. EVERY TIME he went out, something related to the clutch assembly malfunctioned. Everything was new (new transmission). First was the pressure plate. Then was the clutch springs in the clutch came out. Then the clutch fork bent, then the hydraulics failed. Throwout bearing went. These are all separate times out with new parts. It spends more time in the shop than on the trail.

When you have multiple problems like that - odds are overwhelming that something basic in the assembly is bad - most likely the centerlines of the engine/transmission are off - could be a the bell housing casting is off or a mount is broken - he needs to go back to basics and make sure everything is aligned and not moving.

Properly setup and driven - manuals should not have any more fails that an automatic - probably have to replace the clutch at 100K but that's about it.
autos - are very Dependant on how hot they get - overheat it and kill the clutches and it's rebuild time - and I've seen that happen at 100K also.

I think this discussion falls under the 'Neverending debate' question. In the end, the answer comes down to what you prefer and use it for.

I personally like the ease of automatics in the city, for stop and go. I also find it better for off-road, because its easy to select a gear and go. You dont have to worry about breaking traction to up shift and down shift. Look at polar expeditions, and Icelanders. You'd be lucky to find a Manual off-road in that country.

However, manual increases the fun factor, which is a key. It also in alot of cases increases milage and reduces weight. But you can't pull as much load (in the liberties case) with a manual.

In my case it's a significant point of frustration - the CRD wasn't offered in manual and the F37 'customer satisfaction' detune - really hurt the performance and that was due to torque converter problems, so I had to buy an aftermarket torque converter to fix the factory's fix for a transmission that I didn't want in the first place....... aaaarrggghhh.

(I still love my diesel - but I don't love the transmission)

Its like my Dad's Aston Martin. The transmission kept crapping out on it. It would just stop working for no reason. I dont think he ever made it from A to B then back to A.

I guess not all transmissions are a match made in heaven.
