Blew up my d30a this morning. What do I need to pull so i can drive it til I can get a new diff? axle shafts and driveline?

Pull the front driveshaft,pull both CV's,pull diff out,and then pull the diff mounts off also.The passenger side and front diff brackets require the removal of the LCA's to get the some bolts out.

Then you will look like me :lol:

Oh and there is zero proof that those collars work.

I know. Can't really hurt tho. So, any tricks to getting everything out? I've got all the bolts out of both ends of the drive shaft but, can't get it to slide together far enough to get out.

so you remove the LCAs completely? When I did jerbachers I took the front bolts out of the LCAs and moved them just a little bit and had enough room to bring it out, maybe I did it wrong!!! :lol:

Got the driveshaft out. Half shafts (and whatever else I decide to yank) can wait til tomorrow.

Thanks, Tom. Would've been happy about it, if it hadn't happened as soon as we all got started playing this morning. Had to ride around in the back of a Samurai with no shocks the rest of the day.

jsc, it happened pretty much just like everyone else's. Trying to climb a hill, front tires started spinning, I turned the wheel a little to the left trying to get traction and got more than I wanted. Immediately knew what it was as soon as I heard it pop.

Not trying to hijack your thread, but if you are getting a collar, maybe we should look into a group buy, or go back to one of the old suppliers for a group buy. I have been trying to find one of these in Canada with no luck.

Apologies if this is off topic.

Back on topic, I am noticing that so far every picture I have seen of an front diff failure, it seems to start where the driveshaft goes into the diff and runs lengthwise down the diff, rear to front. The diff collar has to be of some help with the flexing.

Has anybody thought about trying to put a ring around the front diff cover to help minimize the flexing at the front? Is it even possible with how the front diff is attached to the suspension?

Not real sure I understand what you mean by "around the front cover." Doubt it would be easy though. I'm not interested in a group buy for the collar, though. Sorry. I don't plan on keeping IFS.

We had on eof our fellow Aussies have this happen earlier this year. Heres a link to the replacement, we didn't actually completely remove the diff carrier, we just swung it all down, shimmeyed the old one out, and the new one in and swung everything back up.

I agree, I'm not sure the collar would have helped, I truely believe that there is simply weak spots in some diff housings, I've seen video of my KJ boucing up and down, wheels spinning and landing, stopping dead, slamming and banging, and didn't break, I've seen others doing the same with Front lockers and actually sheer the halfshafts without breaking the diff housing, then, I watched a diff grenade on soft dirt, no wheels in the air, no wheel spin, just driving up and BANG. I think is a manufacture fault, looking at the fracture point, you could see very big crystals in the alloy in the area that gave first, and on the otherside much smaller crystals where it had been forced to give after the inital failure, But, because we drive these 4x4's up hill, Jeep just say its from doing that. Driving up hills. How do you prove it, when only a handful fail, and whilst doing what the car was made for.

Thanks for the offer to help fix it, guys. Like I said, it's not getting fixed though, it's getting replaced with a solid axle. I did manage to get the half-shafts out yesterday. Only took a couple hours once I figured out what I needed to do. Not gonna worry taking the diff completely out til I do the swap, 'cause i don't want to bother with getting it aligned after removing the LCA. Tires are MTRs LT245/75R16

Look at where the thing broke. I really don't think a two-piece collar would've saved him.
